Two Americans stricken by the Ebola virus in West Africa will be transported via private, specially equipped aircraft back to the United States for treatment, the U.S. State Department said Friday.

The government did not identify the Americans, but presumably they are the two charity workers, Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol, who have been identified by their organizations as having been stricken with Ebola in Liberia. Emory University Hospital on Thursday announced that one patient with Ebola would be treated there but would not disclose the patient’s identity.

The decision by the government to conduct the medical evacuations has provoked fear and dismay among some Americans, who worry about the spread of the unusually lethal virus, which has killed about 60 percent of the Africans infected since the latest outbreak of Ebola began in March.

The male physician/patient is going to Emory University medical center in Atlanta. It is one of only 4 or 5 secure isolation facilities in the nation...and one of the great medical schools here, as well. And, of course, being right across the street from the CDC headquarters is an advantage.

The female physician/patient has not had her destination released.
