Australia's smoking crackdown continues!

Australia is set to crack down further on smoking with a 50 per cent hike in the rate of tobacco tax.
The country introduced the world's harshest packaging laws when it outlawed all branding on cigarette packets except for the name of the manufacturer, printed in small type.
The packages boast graphic photographs of diseased body parts, including gangrenous limbs, and of smokers dying from cancer.Australian ministers today announced that taxes on tobacco will rise by 12.5 per cent in each of the next four years. ............. NZ is following closely behind..we go up $1 a year in taxes n will now introduce plain packaging. SO many of my friends gave up because it costs about $20 a packet. And NO the taxes of smokers does not even begin to cover the cost of the health effects so that is another weak argument of smokers. Go Auz

Simple message to that one is to start rolling your own and whilst i would admit that smoking is a very bad habit people should be left to make their own choice on the matter without having governments to tell them what to do and the taxes raised through smokers is enough to pay for anything that might possibly go wrong with them health wise in the future.



 

I think that it all depends on one's constitution as my grandfather smoked a pipe for all of his life and when he eventually retired and was decorated for services to the RAF for the role that he played in being one of those that liberated the Netherlands he used to swear by a bottle of Scotch whiskey every night and lived well into his mid 90's and didn't die from a smoking or drinking related illness!

the Tax Raised from Ciggies excceds the cost of Helth care to smokers.

Before this increase;
Smokers cost 9.7 of Health spending and make up 19% of population

SO smokers cost about $12 billion minus $7.5 billion leaving $4.5 billion out of $108 billion remaining.
19% of 108 billion is over $20 billion (what smokers have paid in other taxes) SO they still paid $15 billion more than helth cost from smoking and when you take into account that nilly any illness they get will be blamed on smoking they have already covered themselves.

The new tax is set to raise another $5 billion which means that the All costs realted to smoking illnesses will be covered just by ciggerette tax.

Yes i fully agree i took the story from another site and the poster that posted it put their own slant on the story within the said story!

Yeah Even the anti smoker groups are admitting it is a sin tax and about revenue raising (Offloading all these refugees doesn't come cheap you know, PNG and Narua Needz to getz Paid  )
