Glasgow 2014 Commonwealty Games
Starts on Wednesday with a feast of sports for people who enjoy a wide variety.
You can explore what is taking place here...
http://www.glasgow2014.com/
According to the last medal table Australia will rinse the rest of the other countries taking place and be so far out of sight they can't be touched. Some of the most intense battles will be in the swimming pool. It's a smaller arena so the atmosphere is so much better.

Good evening, Gerber.
Actually, my speciality event is the three legged race but my running partner has a sore ankle and can't compete - the rope hurt and chaffed.
I'm prepared to give you a run out to see if we can reach the gold medal standard for that event.
The medal award would of course have to go to Scotland but I would thank you for your contribution in my victory speech.
You up for it my bonnie lass?

Will you be getting coverage of the games over there Veya?
Glasgow is awash with visitors from many parts of the world and there are many events all over the city from bandstands and the like.
They've done a great job but many have lost their family homes and small business premises to make way for all the building works that had to be done to make this all possible.

Yes we will But I think it is at night... we will get highlights either way
Must admit Commonwealth games have become less and less of a view draw card over the years.

Re: Glasgow 2014 Commonwealty Games
Did any of you watch the opening ceremony last night?
Fantastic and it went off without a hitch. Even Rod Stewart was brought in but he really just shouts now.
Susan Boyle did a smashing rendition of Mull of Kintyre backed by the pipes and drums.
I think everyone played a blinder.

4 golds today for Scotland but England lead the table so far with Australia second.
I'm off to watch some of the highlights for the other one's that I missed but I'll probably be back later.

It is also heart warming to see our Queen and witness the warmth and respect she deserves.
Queen was 'delighted' by tricky puzzle posed by Commonwealth Games baton
The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh had no trouble solving the puzzle of opening the Commonwealth Games baton which foiled Prince Imran of Malaysia and Sir Chris Hoy.

The Queen is an incredibly important aspect of British life, she does look good it is such a pity that a few people do not understand the importance of a constitutional monarchy, she has been nothing but the greatest of servants to the British people, she has conducted herself with elegance, dignity and respect, I loves our Queen and so should you.Sassy wrote:Oh Scrat, they obviously had told her, they wanted her to look good lol

Well it's one of the things we disagree on I'm afraid Scrat lol. I don't see why one family should be made into something special and just because of who they were born to. I hold all men and women equal, I wouldn't curtsey to the Queen and I wouldn't expect her to curtsey to me.

LOL, we'd both probably fall flat on our faces. When my Dad got the OBE he was allowed to take two people, he took my Mum and my Nan, cos he know I'd never curtsey.

She got a tremendous welcome at Celtic Park Scrat. The audience did her proud and they played God Save the Queen. She was bang on form as well and looked in fine fettle.

Been absolutely great so far. My OH being a Scot is loving it, especially when a Scot wins and they play 'Flower of Scotland' as the anthem.

Re: Glasgow 2014 Commonwealty Games
UK view: England gives Commonwealth Games opening ceremony the thumbs up!
ENGLAND has put neighbourly hostilities aside and given Scotland’s Commonwealth Games opening ceremony an almost universal nod of approval.
Opening ceremonies at large-scale sporting events are almost universally pilloried for their theatrics and cliche-filled set pieces, but England’s media were more glowing in their praise of Glasgow’s effort this morning than they were for their own Olympics two years ago.

Have you read the daily mail comments?
I think the media have been very kind and rightly so, hopefully future opening ceremonies will be less uptight. I was not interested in it but sooooo glad I watched it, it was lighthearted and fun. Even the struggle to open the baton got a smile from the queen but in any other ceremony it would have been a catastrophe.

During the medal ceremonies why are the trays with holes in and filled with only two items processioned into the hall individually ?

OK, Sport...
How's your maths ?
DIVIDE the British Tally by your population of 66 million..
And the Aussie Tally by our population of 23 million..
AND THEN tell us again how good it looks for England ?
And being English and British I can see that the British Isles are the winners, nearly 300 medals, wow!!!.
Scotland has provided the best commonwealth games ever, the professionalism, atmosphere and friendliness of these games will live long in the memory, if it does not take any credit away from the Scots I would like to think that the London labour Olympics were a positive platform for British sport and pushed the athletes of these islands to excel, and we did.
The fact that Veya was so dismissive of the home nations makes this ribbing even more pleasurable.
Well done England on winning these games, however the greater winner has been Scotland and sport.

It has to be that. It has to be the Labour's London Olympics that explains why athletes from the home nations have returned a record haul of medals this time.
Australia usually always wins these games and by a substantial margin as well but not this time.
Anyway, it's next stop Australia in 2018.

Re: Glasgow 2014 Commonwealty Games
The closing ceremony wasn't bad but the real star of those performing was Australian singer Jessica Mauboy. She outshone the lot of them including Kylie who looked second class compared to her.
A good night was had by all though.
Haste ye back
