More from our reporter Neil Elkes: "The scene of the shooting is a street just like many others in Birmingham.

"The rows of once elegant three-storey town houses, and pavements lined with tall trees are past their best.

"But in the middle of the road is a small blue tent marking the spot where a man fell after being shot last night, shielding any evidence from the elements.

"For a while Islamic prayers filled the air coming from a loud speaker at a home just yards from the spot, within the wide police cordon."
