Ultra-religious ex-American footballer 'kept teenage son in dark basement for two years as punishment'
Former Georgia Tech linebacker Recardo Wimbush and his wife Therian are accused of malicious and intentional cruelty to children and false imprisonment
A former American Football star is alleged to have kept his teenage son prisoner in the basement for two years because he stole a DVD player.
Super-religious former Georgia Tech player Recardo Wimbush Sr, 33, and his wife Therian Cornelia Wimbush, 37, allegedly locked up 13-year-old Recardo Jr because he had 'sinned' and needed to be 'kept on the straight and narrow'.
During the ordeal, it is reported that he had no access to his nine siblings, the windows were blacked out and he had no books or toys with him.
It is reported that he was kept in a tiny, sparsely furnished room with all the windows blacked out and no access to books, toys or his nine siblings.
The couple, from Buford, north of Atlanta in the US, have been charged with malicious and intentional cruelty to children and false imprisonment
Corporal Jake Smith, spokesman for Gwinnett County Police, said Wimbush and his wife told investigators they had locked Recardo Jr in the basement for 'disciplinary reasons'.
When he was found by social workers, Smith said that he had "a large plastic jar, which was apparently used as a toilet".
When asked by a judge at a family court hearing why the 13-year-old was locked up, the Wimbushes said it was because he was a threat to their other children.
However, sources told the Daily Mail that he was being punished for stealing a DVD player.
Recardo Snr and Therian are both devoted to an unusual religion which worships Yah and their family website - You've Been Wimbushed - explains the importance of the religion.
Alongside photos of a seemingly happy family, they preach about Yah's message and instructions which they say will help others 'to understand and explain to your children the safe and proper way to use the earth, to navigate through life and to help give you a long lasting life'.

Yah is the name of the Judeo/Christian god.
The first occurrence of the Name YAH occurs in Exodus 15:2, where Moses and Israel sing a song regarding their deliverance from Pharoah’s horsemen:
Exodus 15:2a (BHS)
The LORD is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation.
But the guy is from Georgia. Another sick southerner.
