American Footballer And Teacher

A person I know from the USA, a retired footballer is teaching here at a university, this is his 10th year here full time.
The first 5 years he had travelling and housing expenses all paid for from here. It was decided to remove his services from the uni because he was too expensive and a visa problem arose, so he, his wife and son went back to the States to live, they had hardly got off their aircraft when he was asked to reconsider going back, he was gobsmacked but exceedingly glad, so were his family as they were very happy here.
His visa prob was sorted and he came back with a new 5 years contract for EVEN more money and a better deal all round.

My point is this, I do not know all details but we are paying his travelling expenses and for his family accommodation in a real top end luxury family apartment near here, the only FACT I really know is the £2200 per month rent he is allowed.

They are a very nice seemingly respectable family but why the name in hell should we be paying his living expenses?????????

Bad timing. Administrative error, I believe.

Is it a publicly funded university? If so, it will spend taxpayer money to hire the people it considers most qualified to fill its positions, and compensate them as it considers appropriate.

Do you think that foreigners, including British, don't teach at public American universities? Their compensation is paid by American taxpayers.

Pay his salary by all means but not his living accommodation.

It's probably an expense incurred by the error of the university, so they feel obligated to compensate him. Maybe he sold his home or gave up a really good apartment. Who knows. Consider it part of the compensation.

I think I have said that...if not, I've implied that.  How does it serve your purpose to raise red herrings?  There are numerous possibilities...

You appear to be assuming something's wrong with this situation. I bet there are several professors at that university who have similar compensation packages. Why don't you call them up and ask about it?

Not short tempered...just thinking it through. It doesn't even have to be a university. Lot's of businesses will move strategic people around from place-to-place and pay for their hotel or dwelling. I remember when we moved west, the company paying for it paid my father not only for the whole family to stay in an Apt./hotel for a couple of weeks, but rented the first home we had for a year.

In this case, I suspect the university fooked up somewhere along the line, and was willing to pay up for the mess they made.

that is not that much allowance for rent. I assume he'd get money for the other expenses in addition.
In previous jobs where I have had to stay else where i have a budget (in addition to wages etc) of $400 a night for accom and food/drink. If it had been the UK for a month it would have been over 3500 pounds (after roughly converting) 
And that is 'worker' tier, 'director/specialist' tier would be even higher.


And.... Why? because there in not enough competent people in the UK, Supply and Demand there is very limited Supply in the UK so if you are competent you are in demand and can command quite good remuneration.
