Mosques launch campaign to stop UK Syria fighters
Imams from around the UK have called on young British Muslims to stay away from the civil war in Syria.
The nationwide campaign is instead encouraging giving to Syria through legitimate charities. The message is going out ahead of Ramadan, which begins this weekend.
It comes after a video emerged showing two young Cardiff men urging others to join a jihadist fight in Syria - where tens of thousands have died in three years of war - and in Iraq. The men are believed to be among 500 Britons fighting in Syria for the militant group Isis (Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant).
The video, thought to have been filmed in Syria, features Nasser Muthana and Reyaad Khan, both 20 and from Cardiff, along with Abdul Rakib Amin, aged about 25 and from Aberdeen. Mr Muthana's younger brother Aseel Muthana, 17, has also joined them. Young men like them are being drawn to Syria by "the slaughter of innocent people" they see on the news and on the internet, according to the Muslim Council of Britain's assistant secretary.
"They dearly want to change the situation," Ibrahim Mogra, who also serves as an imam in Leicester, told the BBC. "And sadly some of these young people are vulnerable to being hoodwinked by people who have a way with words to try to recruit them to pick up arms."But we want to make sure - absolutely clear to our young people - that violence is not condoned by Islam.

Re: Mosques launch campaign to stop UK Syria fighters
Thousands of Muslims have gathered across Britain today to hear a message of peace. More than 5,000 worshippers attended a mosque in Morden, south west London, and thousands more went to mosques across the country. They urged young people to abandon extremism and denounced the actions of the insurgent group Islamic State in Iraq and Greater Syria (Isis).
The special message, relayed after prayers and the Friday sermon, was organised by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community (AMC) amid reports that Britons are among those who are fighting with Isis and fears of the alleged radicalisation of young Muslims willing to fight overseas. An AMC spokesman estimated that more than 10,000 worshippers may have heard the message.
He said: "The message was for us as a community, in Britain and worldwide, to denounce the actions of Isis and for young British Muslims who are exporting extremism to re-look at their position." He also said the community is calling them to "abandon extremism and discuss whatever problems they are having".

Re: Mosques launch campaign to stop UK Syria fighters
That is amazing. Hopefully this time, the message of thousands of Muslims heeding the call to peace will prevail in the media storylines, instead of the usual "othering" and making them into the bogeyman that we're supposed to be afraid of.
I was recently thinking of posting a mock story here but decided against it -- the title was going to be, "Billions of Muslims Peacefully Go About Their Lives."
Because for every one Muslim who makes headlines with an act of violence, there are millions of others who went through their day working, helping their neighbors, providing for their families, and doing no harm to anyone.
Just like for every sensationalist story here in the U.S. about one illegal immigrant from Mexico committing a crime, there are millions who are here legally, who are just as American as any other American, and who are quietly putting their noses to the grindstone every day to help the country keep running.

Agreed Ben, but what odds do you wanna lay on the first person to say "its only a few"?
This is the sad part, you have the likes of some posters never seeing the fact many Muslims are against extremists, many Muslims by far are the victims themselves of Muslim extremists, where again people use any reason to scapegoat and stereotype groups with blame and fear and it is only united together as nations, that will show to the extremists their goal with fail, just as the far right goal will fail. Both want to sow the seed of discontent and start conflicts and as stated standing united against them, denies them any chance of this happening.

Too true. We have many conservatives here in the U.S. who will casually contend that no Muslim ever said a thing after the 9/11 attacks, even though tje attacks actually were condemned by most quarters within the Muslim world. (Interestingly, even Saddam Hussein quietly sent his condolences, something hardly anybody acknowledges.)
I just think that Muslims present too irresistible a scapegoat to the bigoted sort of person in the West. Muslims have a different language, different religion, different complexion and different culture, so it's all too easy for the small-minded to make them all into the bad guy, and they'll continually insist that you and I are wrong, despite my excellent relations with my Muslim neighbor here in Texas.
They're the same sort of people as Ann Coulter, who I posted about the other day. She insists that if you have a great-grandfather who was born in the U.S., there is no way you have an interest in the World Cup. I have great-great-great-grandfathers who were born here and I've hardly missed a game, so according to her, I don't exist.

I must have missed that thread, wow, did she really say that?
How absurd can you get to say such a thing about people in the US if they are interested in the World Cup, who I might add have done way better than England .

Yeah, her column is riddled with bigotry and ignorance. I may have actually taken more offense to the ignorance than the bigotry, actually:

Apparently, none of these Yanks fans in Grant Park, Illinois had great-grandfathers who were born in the U.S.
Re: Mosques launch campaign to stop UK Syria fighters
I hear there were some associated with the Nazi's who were against slaughtering the Jews and invading neighbouring countries.
We still wiped the Nazi's out and have banned the word Hitler and anything to do with the Nazi's.
When will we be forced to do the same again?

WTF, you do not half come out with some shit at times Andy and no, Hitler has not been banned as a word and are you seriously equating Muslims now as if they are all one big Nazi party?
I guess you are a tad lapse also on history where some prominent Nazi's were not even tried but used by both the Allies and Russians after the war.
