Justin Harris, Father Of Dead Toddler 'Searched Online For How Long It Would Take For Animal To Die In Hot Car'
The father of a toddler who died after being left in a stiflingly hot car all day had previously searched online for how long it would take for an animal to die in the same way, it is alleged.
Justin Ross Harris has been charged with felony murder and cruelty to children in the second degree after the death of his 22-month-old son Cooper. The 33-year-old denies the charges.
Harris told police he had left the little boy in the family car by accident after forgetting to drop him off at daycare last Wednesday. He continued to work, claiming he only noticed his son was still in the vehicle as he drove home.

I saw that. Tragic.
But if that's all they've got, I would go to trial if I were him.

That is what I am interested in, to see how things pan out in the trial, if it goes to one of course.

Well the sod should get 100 years for neglect anyway!
Let him go to trial.

It would be to his advantage to go to trial. Unless they have more, what the state is trying to do is force a plea deal. If he hasn't got the money, he will panic and go for it.
If he can hang on, he should make the state go to trial. They are not going to give him anything very attractive, and he stands an excellent chance of walking. People will empathize, notwithstanding your punitive ideology Lil Andy. It's a jury selection case.

America is weird
Justice only if you can pay
On this Most Aussies including myself would agree with Andy... you don't leave a child in hot car by accident it is neglect even if it isn't a premeditate murder.
Here the whole dying in the car from heat is a very real and obvious thing, you are considered a monster for leaving a dog in the car with the windows up let alone a child.

The channel cites a law enforcement source as stating the search history on the computer revealed someone had looked into how long it takes for an animal to die in a hot car.
It could not confirm when the internet search was made.
I think that might make a big difference; the longer ago it was, the more likely he can say this was just a cruel coincidence.

Well, I don't deny that America is weird. Yes, justice only for the wealthy. Hell, the OJ cop, Mark Furman, even wrote a book about how he felt the evil was how the wealthy get off...I guess he wanted to see everyone as poor so they all could meet injustice equally. Lol.
I can see andy's view, too. It happens frequently in the US...bur more so with dogs. Rarely with kids. Nevertheless, it happens and there are enough people who say, The parents have suffered enough...it serves no purpose to prosecute them.
Those who live by a reward/punishment ethical system want to see that punishment, no doubt. But it happens most often with mothers who are shopping and forget the kid is in the car, and you know how people are loath to prosecute Caucasian females. So there are countervailing sentiments at work. It's not a perfect system.

It would seem like if it was a real mistake, prosecuting the guy would just compound his misery, but I don't think it was a mistake.
It's frustrating for us in the media who every year remind people not to leave a child or a pet in a hot car, and still a few do it. Nothing works perfectly ...

There's an old saying in the military: if it can happen, it will happen. This was a constant saying in discussions about someone detonating a nuclear device. But it applies to situations like this likewise. If someone can leave a baby in a car, sure enough it will happen. It's a corollary of my old saying...neglect (or disinterest) is the worst thing that can happen to someone.
All you can do is keep vigilant.

Depending upon when this search was made would be relevant to his innocence.
Still, why would you google how long it would take a dog to die anyway?
Can someone give me a good reason why you'd want to know that?

You don't really need a good reason to want to know anything, IMO. Yesterday I was possessed with the need to know how closely bison are related to yaks, for some reason.
Practically, it would be interesting to know if he has pets and ever takes them for car rides ...

I had watched a Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode where a character had realized she was addicted to using magic to enhance her life and had decided to swear it off for good.
I'm sure that's what got me to thinking about yaks

I'm the one who went for the bra. That's where I got the pic about breasts in victor's thread down in Miscellany.
You are right Ben. I have found myself googling the most inane stuff, for no real reason. Just stream of consciousness.

I agree...if he is guilty. It would be 1st-degree murder. Where is the evidence?

at BEST surely he is guilty of the worst grade of negligent manslaughter, and therefore should still be severly punished.....(and incidently castrated...clearly he is not fit to have children)

Yes, but the prosecution is clearly going for premeditated homicide. If they get a jury to connect up an intentional search about manner of death on a computer, with the death itself, they would have made out a case of 1st-degree murder. You can't negligently intend something.
The prosecution doesn't appear to be going for negligence.
