Multi-culturalism is responsible for terror in our midst

Due to these twin ideologies we are now confronted by the deadly menace of militant Islam within the heart of our society. In the name of diversity and tolerance, the state has allowed barbaric intolerance to flourish in our midst.

The lethal danger from jihadism has been graphically highlighted by the growing number of Muslims from Britain now fighting in Syria and Iraq. The police have estimated that more than 500 young radicals from our shores have travelled to the Middle East to join extremist groups such as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS), a notoriously savage organisation that wants to create a despotic medieval caliphate.

In addition, around 300 jihadists are thought to have returned to Britain after involvement in terrorist campaigns in Syria and Iraq, posing a lethal threat to the fabric of our civilisation. According to Richard Barrett, the former head of counter-terrorism at MI6, the sheer number of these returning zealots means that it would be "a completely impossible task" for our security forces to keep track of all of them.

The British Muslim link to jihadism was further emphasised over the weekend when a group of Islamists from Britain put a recruitment video online, urging young Muslims to join them in the fight with ISIS. "What prevents you from obtaining martyrdom and the pleasure of your lord?" asks one of the group. He has subsequently been identified as Reyaad Khan, a 20-year-old from Cardiff.

THE mounting evidence of home-grown jihadism has led to a predictable bout of hand-wringing and self-flagellation from left-wing commentators.

"Why do these young men feel so alienated from British society?" they ask in bewildered tones. But there is nothing incomprehensible about the actions of the British jihadists. They are just doing the same as Muslim extremists all over the world, following a vile political ideology. In their eager embrace of the blood soaked horror of ISIS, they are no different from the butchers of Drummer Lee Rigby or the kidnappers of schoolgirls in Nigeria, or the misogynist Taliban brutes of Afghanistan or the Islamic death squads in Somalia.

The British state, especially under Tony Blair, pretended that militant Islam could be contained at home by fighting it abroad but that was a complete fallacy. Our interventions in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya have only succeeded in fuelling extremism within Britain, whipping up jihadists to new heights of self-righteous fury.

Another great fallacy of the progressive interventionists is that the flames of extremism can be extinguished by westernised education. But that is more wishful thinking. Just like the July bombers of 2005, all the British jihadists in the Middle East went through our schools system, yet still emerged as radicals.

But by far the worst error has been the state's addiction to immigration and multiculturalism. Domestic jihadism is the direct creation of a political class obsessed with open borders and the transformation of our society's structure. Thanks to these two strategies, the Muslim population of Britain has now reached almost three million, while one in 10 British children under the age of four is Muslim. The pro-immigration brigade tells us that this is no problem, since the "vast majority" of Muslims are moderate. But that is more self-deceit at odds with the evidence. One independent survey showed that 40 per cent of Muslims here want to live under Sharia law; another revealed that 32 per cent of Muslim students at university felt killing in the name of religion is justified.

Such attitudes have been reinforced by the state's fixation with cultural diversity which, instead of promoting integration, encourages migrant groups to cling to their traditional customs, practices, even languages. That is how we have ended up with Muslim enclaves dominated by the burkha, sharia tribunals, forced marriages, and ballot box fraud. Nor do the mosques do much to promote social cohesion. A recent study found that, out of Britain's 1,700 mosques, just two follow a modernist interpretation of the Koran, while a quarter do not even allow women on the premises.

And the truth is that Islamic extremists have contempt for our society. Their allegiance is entirely to their hardline doctrine, not to this country.

INDEED, it is absurd to describe them as "British" at all, for they have complete disdain for the normal responsibilities of British citizenship.

They are interested only in exploiting us, whether it be through welfare or education or housing or legal aid.

The political class has appeased radical Islam for far too long. The militants have only been emboldened by this stance, recognising it as weakness dressed up as tolerance. If we are to conquer the enemy within, that means getting far tougher with the extremists. Jihadists with only limited connections to Britain should be stopped from re-entering the country by the withdrawal of their passports. And those who make it back should face long sentences for terrorism and treachery.

But we would not be in this mess if our rulers had decided to protect our society instead of feebly colluding with our enemies.

When there is so much Muslim-inspired carnage going on all around the world, we in the West have two rather different ways we deal with this disturbing information. The first is the 'racist' way. We look at the bombings, beheadings, crucifixions, rapes, murders, and Muslim mayhem in general, and we ask ourselves one simple question – is such behaviour actively associated with the core tenets of Islam? Which of course it is... and of course we are 'Islamophobic' for noticing it.

The second way of dealing with it is to emulate the thinking of a certain Andreas Krieg, a Middle East security analyst at King's College London who was quoted in a recent Daily Mail article headlined: "From Syria to Iraq, Kenya to Malaysia: How new era of Islamic fundamentalism is spreading fear and chaos around the world."

The article mentions just a few incidents over the last week or so. Quote:

Footage has emerged showing armed militant children as young as eight watching as an Iraqi prisoner is executed by ISIS, while another shows a captured Iraqi police officer being beheaded. At least five people have died in an attack on Kenya's coast just days after Al Qaeda-inspired terror group Al Shabaab kills 60 in twin massacres. Islamist militants Boko Haram are feared to have snatched 90 villagers in the same area of Nigeria where they seized nearly 300 Christian schoolgirls two months ago. A human rights group has warned that revenge attacks between Christian and Islamic militia in the Central African Republic risk creating conditions for a genocide reminiscent of Bosnia in the 1990s. Just last night, an explosion in a Nigerian shopping mall killed at least 21 people and injured 17 more as the nation prepared to watch its football team play Argentina in the World Cup.

The estimable Mr Krieg appears to have PhDs and other such qualifications in abundance, but like so many overeducated people in Britain today, he cannot see the wood for the trees. In a sign of the quite literal insanity gripping the liberal West, he observes the harsh reality of Islam in action, but concludes as follows:

All the empirical evidence shows that extremism is on the rise. You're seeing it in all the headlines, then you're looking at Iraq, you're looking at Syria, you're looking at Nigeria. But in all three cases this has nothing to do with Islam. I think people in the West may think it is because they feel alienated by Islam. There is a lot of Islamophobia.

Closer to home meanwhile, Sky News tells us the possible figure for 'British' youths fighting in Iraq is now 1,500, which suggests Britain has at least one credible export market, although not perhaps one we should be proud of. The Times (behind a pay-wall) covers this story, but also goes on to talk about the influence over British Muslims of British mosques, which are becoming increasingly hard-line.

The gist of the article was the growing rise of extremist Salafi mosques in Britain, linked to the growing demographic of Somali immigrants. One hundred mosques are already under Salafi control, with this figure expected to grow to 50% of all mosques within one generation – which really ought to give 'liberal' non-Islamophobes a wake-up call.

The Spectator magazine draws on a seven-year study conducted by Innes Bowen, author of Medina in Birmingham, Najaf in Brent: Inside British Islam, which highlights the massive influence wielded over British mosques by the extreme Deobandi school of Islamic jurisprudence. Quote:

So which Islamic schools of thought run Britain's mosques today? The influence of Saudi Arabia’s Wahhabi movement is often cited. But the Wahhabis – or Salafis as they prefer to be called – control just 6 per cent of mosques. The largest single group – the one which arguably gives Islam in Britain much of its character – is the Deobandi. It controls around 45 per cent of Britain's mosques and nearly all the UK-based training of Islamic scholars. What most Deobandi scholars have in common is a conservative interpretation of Islamic law: television and music for the purposes of entertainment, for example, are frowned upon if not banned. Women are advised not to emerge from their homes any more than is necessary.

There is a good reason why this interpretation of Islam sounds so similar to that of Afghanistan: the Taleban movement grew out of the Deobandi madrassas of Pakistan. Tony Blair justified to the Muslim world the post-9/11 attacks on Afghanistan on the basis that driving out the Taleban would be an act of liberation: 'I don’t believe,' he said, 'that anybody seriously wants to live under that kind of regime.' Did he realise that the rules enforced by law in Afghanistan were being adopted, voluntarily, in parts of Leicester, Dewsbury, and Blackburn? Even the Prime Minister seemed not to know about Deobandi Britain.

The Taleban connection is valid. Not only do we export Jihadis, we export the very worst sort of Jihadis. This cream of British exports quite incredibly manages to offend the sensibilities of local Jihadists in Syria, who are apparently quite taken aback by the rash of Christian crucifixions carried out by British Muslims in particular. Not exactly British values, as Education Secretary Michael Gove would like to see taught in our schools, but how does one teach British values to people who actively hate everything about Britain?

So here is the situation: ever growing Islamic violence around the world; ever growing numbers of British Muslims being radicalised at ever increasingly radical British mosques. Logic would suggest this is all going to end in tears, so it would be useful if our ruling elites started to get a handle on this, I think we could all agree.

But they are not. Our intelligence services tell us they cannot possibly follow each and every British jihadist returning home from Syria and Iraq. The government is cutting their funding even as I write this article. Some 17% of their money has been axed since David Cameron came to power, and more cuts are expected, whilst our overseas aid budget (which Cameron considers his proudest achievement) stands at over ten-thousand-million-pounds in 2013, an increase of 28% over 2012. One country to benefit from this money is Pakistan.

Madness, sheer utter madness. Our prime minister tells us we have a lot to learn from Islam. The self-same prime minister is a founding signatory of Unite Against Fascism, the far-left organisation which allows beheaders of British soldiers to make speeches at their events. Liberal Democrat MP Simon Hughes looks forward to the day Britain has a Muslim prime minister; possible future prime minister Boris Johnson is a keen advocate of mass immigration and the entry of Islamic Turkey into the EU. Finally, a leading terrorism expert, Andreas Krieg, looks around the burning world and concludes that the religion of Islam has nothing to do with it -- and that anyone who says it does must be an Islamophobe.

At least we were aware of icebergs in the days of the Titanic, but how odd is it today, when the lookout on the bridge spots looming icebergs on the horizon and files his report as "No icebergs imminent, Captain". Still, who can blame him, who wants to be thought of as bergophobic? Full ahead, HMS Great Britain!

Norway: Children as young as 6 performing Sharia checks

‘Mom, I will be punished by God?,’ asked her daughter (6), after Muslim classmates had criticized her clothes at school.”…

Minority Counselor Michael Cruz works and lives in Groruddalen. He is well aware of the problem. He believes that it has become common among Muslims down to the first grade of primary school to exercise social control. They also do so in other arenas, such as the playground.

“What religion are you?,” is often one of the first things kids ask each other about. They are told at home that it is best to play with those who are good Muslims and who have a good reputation, he said….

“You’re a bad girl!,” they say to children who are not wearing the Islamic veil. These are attitudes children have learned from their parents. These are not opinions they have managed to produce themselves.

What constitutes religious bullying these days? Some would suggest crucifying Christians in Syria, burning down churches in Egypt or kidnapping Christian girls in Nigeria might adhere to the description of bullying, or at the very least failing to adhere to the guidelines related to Inculcating Inter-Faith Best Practice In the Workplace……

In Britain, we have a rather different interpretation; witness the case of NHS occupational therapist Victoria Wasteney, who has been disciplined for bullying a Muslim co-worker. Ms Wasteney’s heinous crimes against humanity started when Muslim X displayed an interest in the anti-human trafficking community work carried out by Ms Wasteney’s church, which needless to say resides not in a hideously white area but in wonderfully multicultural East London, which unfortunately suffers from human trafficking in a way, for example, mono-cultural Cornwall does not.

Anyway, Ms Wasteney invited Muslim X to a sports day organised by her church, which some might think is just what fostering inter-community relations is all about, but not it would appear, when a Muslim is invited to participate in the affairs of the infidel. Senior NHS management described this flagrant breach of multicultural ideals as being “inappropriate.”

Something else considered inappropriate was Ms Wasteney having the temerity to pray with Muslim X, who had come to her in tears about problems in her life. Muslim X appeared quite happy to allow this to happen, which is after all simply an act of Christian kindness directed toward someone genuinely unhappy. How very inappropriate in multi-faith, multicultural Britain is that!

Oddly enough, this is very much a one way street of inter-faith understanding. Non-Muslim children are actively encouraged (see video) to pop into mosques in order to understand Islam, or at least the milquetoast Islam put on display for naïve infidels. In fact, the Littleton Green Community School in Huntington, Staffordshire, warned parents who were against their nippers visiting a mosque with the following Orwellian threat:

“As part of the national religious education curriculum together with the multicultural community in which we live, it is a statutory requirement for primary school children to experience and learn about different cultures. A refusal to allow your child to attend (the mosque) will result in a Racial Discrimination note being attached to your child’s education record, which will remain on this file throughout their school career.”

In some cases native British children are forced to recite the Shahada, which is an intrinsic element in converting to Islam. However, the idea that Muslim children are required to visit a church to take part in Confirmation classes is clearly ridiculous and would never happen. This submission before Islam is nicely summed up by Ms Wasteney’s quivering appeasement when confronted about her dreadful, racist, Islamophobic behaviour. Quote:

“One of the earliest conversations I can recall was one in which she (Muslim X) said she had just moved to London. She felt that God had a real plan and a purpose for her, but I was very cautious because our environment is such that these things can be misconstrued and, with her being from a different faith background, I was mindful of being respectful of that”.

Do Muslims ever worry about being misconstrued? Are they mindful about those from a different faith background to whom they should show some respect? OK, you don’t need to answer that foolish question…..in fact, such is the one way street for respecting other cultures and faiths in Britain that merely standing up against aggressive Muslim intimidation makes one an ‘Islamophobe’ who should be immediately sacked, as in the case of Lebanese Christian Nohad Halawi who recently lost her job at Heathrow airport.

According to theGuardian, Ms Halawi says she was treated unfairly and sacked because of rumours she was “anti-Islam” after speaking out over bullying and intimidation by Muslim colleagues. She says she defended a fellow Christian employee who was mocked by Muslim workers for wearing a cross….. in England….can we rationally accept this is really happening?

And so this prostration before Islam goes on. You will note no Muslim is ever sacked for abusing a Christian who wears a cross, but Christians who object to being vilified for their belief are persecuted merely for asking Muslims to stop bullying them, or are disciplined for simply asking Muslims to take part in inter-faith activities.

You don’t need to be a dyed-in-the-wool-Islamophobe to notice the extreme unfairness in all the above. Can anyone really imagine Muslims in a Muslim country being treated the way Christians in Western countries are treated? The West – particularly Britain – is behaving in a distinctly abnormal and pathological manner when it comes to the preferential treatment for Islam and the concomitant persecution of the very people who helped make the West what it is.

There are countless other stories replicating those mentioned in this article. Muslims who attack native Englishmen and women are rarely found guilty of racial or religious hate crimes. Muslims are rarely sacked or disciplined for promoting their faith in the workplace; Muslims who burn poppies on Remembrance Sunday are given derisory fines; Muslims are able to chase British policemen down the road whilst shouting run kuffir, run at the retreating enforcers of the law. Muslims can hold up placards calling for death and destruction but are never prosecuted for inciting religious hatred – and whilst this is all going on, the non-Muslim native British find themselves second-class citizens in their own country having been betrayed utterly by the appeasing, no resistance on my watch, traitor class ruling elites.

This perverse double standard is the sign of a country, culture and people with no stomach for survival it would seem. Given the demographic rise of Islam in Britain, coupled with the increasing radicalisation of Muslim youth, survival is something we should really be thinking about, shouldn’t it? But whilst the treacherous elites continue to appease the intolerance of Islam, we must sadly conclude that those who will have to actually fight for survival will not be those who could have stopped it whilst it could be decisively stopped. Instead, it is our young children and the yet-to-be-born who will have to fight against a far stronger enemy in the future, and an enemy which at that point in time might just be too powerful to defeat.

Read it and weep for what has happened to Britain and where it can only inevitably lead, and ask yourself just what this perverted attitude has to do with a supposedly apolitical National Health Service, when it instead reads as though it were penned by the propaganda arm of a genuine dictatorship with little sympathy for the natives within their own homeland:

Call the enemy what you like – radicals, fundamentalists, Islamic terrorists, jihadists, or, historically, just plain Muslims. Connect the dots to their past activities, and you will uncover a disturbing pattern: a fanatical commitment to eliminating infidels.

Some of you may recall the American Embassy bombings (in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and in Nairobi, Kenya), and the brutal killings of innocent Westerners (Wall Street Journal Reporter Daniel Pearl, Businessman Nick Berg, and American Helicopter Engineer Paul Johnson). For those who don’t here are a few highlights from the past you may recall, which should help connect the dots.

· The murder of Robert Kennedy by a Palestinian national, Sirhan Sirhan (1968);
· The eleven Israeli athletes murdered during the Munich olympic games by Palestinians (1972);
· The Beirut barracks’ massacre led by Hezbollah that killed several hundred military members (1983);
· The Lockerbie, Scotland, bombing of a Pan American flight by Libyan terrorists, which killed 271 victims (1988);
· The September 11th coordinated attack of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon by al-Qaeda, which resulted in about 3,000 deaths and $10 billion in property damages (2001);
· The shooting of 13 soldiers and the injuring of about 30 others at Fort Hood military base by a psychiatrist, shouting Allahu Akbar! (Allah is great) (2009);
· The savage murder of the U.S. Ambassador and several others in Benghazi, Libya by jihadists (2012);
· The Boston Marathon bombings, planned by two Chechen brothers, which killed 3 and injured 260 (2013);
· And the kidnapping of about 230 Nigerian school girls by the Islamic terrorists, Boko Haram (2014).

History is replete with many more examples. Open your history books, the ones which haven’t been rewritten by revisionists, and this is what you will uncover:

· In 622 AD, Mohamed, a camel driver, saw the light. It was revealed to him through the divine voice of Gabriel while he was in a religious trance, worshipping in a cave. From 622 AD until his death in 632 AD, Mohamed followed this light and inspired others to do the same. During the subsequent wars, designed to expand Mohamed’s control in the Arabian Peninsula, he and his followers slaughtered non-believers, kidnapped women and children, and stole their land and gold.
· After his death, his followers continued in his footsteps. Through war, they spread Islam beyond the borders of the Arabian Peninsula into India, North Africa, and even Spain.
· In 732 AD, Charles Martel halted Muslim advances into Europe during the Battle of Tours, France. This defeat in Europe, though, didn’t end Islamic expansion; the Muslims continued to crush the infidels in other areas of the world, taking advantage of every opportunity available to them to murder and enslave.
· By the 9th century, they had conquered Syria, Palestine, Persia, and Egypt. They had a strong foothold across Northern Africa to Spain and Portugal. And they had defeated the Byzantine fleets and took control of the Mediterranean Sea.
· In 1095, Pope Urban II became concerned about the Christians slaughtered during their pilgrimages to the Holy Lands. Determined to protect them and the Byzantine Empire’s influence in the area, he organized the support of European Christians and in 1096 proclaimed the first Crusade. The Crusades ended in 1291 with the Muslims controlling the Holy Lands until World War I.
· In the 1890s, Abdul Hamid II, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, savagely killed 300,000 Christians who dared to rebel against his enslavement of them. His actions, which received international attention, but no sanctions from the West, earned for him the title the Red Sultan.
· During World War I, the Young Turks attempted to revive the decaying Ottoman Empire by creating a Turkey just for the Turks. What resulted was the savage genocide of millions of Christians. It is generally believed – though Turkish scholars and sympathizers will deny it – that this genocide inspired Hitler’s actions during World War II against the Jews. (The Infidels by Joe David is a well-researched book that focuses on the World War I genocide from the Assyrians’ point of view.)

During their wars and attacks against disbelievers, the Muslim method for eliminating infidels were often cruel and barbaric. In the book The Armenian Genocide, edited by Richard Hovannisian, Armenian scholar, Anahit Khosroeva writes the following about the World War I massacre:

The skulls of small children were smashed with rocks; the bodies of girls and women, who resisted rape or conversion into Moslems, were chopped into pieces live; men were mostly beheaded or thrown into the nearby river; the clergy, monks and nuns were skinned or burned live.

To achieve success in battle, the Muslims developed a system for rebuilding their military force. It was not uncommon for them to abduct young boys, often while still in their early teens, sometimes even younger, brainwash them and turn them into soldiers; pubescent girls were frequently used as whores for both pleasure and procreation. Any Christian captured who refused to convert by pronouncing Shahada, accepting the faith, were either killed in the most savage way imaginable or left to live in a Dar al-Harb (an abode of War). In these abodes, they were reduced to dhimmi, non-Muslim citizens, denied personal rights and burdened with heavy taxes. In short, they were slaves to their captors.

In an article entitled “Genocide in the Middle East: The Ottoman Empire, Iraq, and Sudan” (published Carolina Academic Press), Professor Hannibal Travis reveals the methods the Turks used to imprint their culture on Northern Cyprus after the invasion of 1974.

The Turks ethnically cleansed the north of the island, village by village . . . . Thousands of Turkish peasants were brought in from mainland Turkey to the New Turkish Republic of North Cyprus to take the place of the displaced Greeks . . . . The destruction of Greek heritages was an insurance against . . . (an) identifiably Greek . . . zone . . . . In the months and years following (the invasion), all but a handful of northern Cyprus’s 502 Greek Orthodox churches, some of Byzantine origin, were vandalized, looted, demolished or put to a new uses including as mosques, stables, latrines, stores and a cinema . . . . The destruction was methodical . . .

(It was) so methodical and so widespread that (it) amount(ed) to the institutionalized obliteration of everything sacred to the Greek.

In reviewing the past, it is true, the Christians had committed their share of sins against man. During the Crusades, for example, enflamed by outrageous propaganda, Crusaders brutally murdered their share of Jews; also, during the Dark Ages, there was the Inquisition in Spain and the barbaric actions of Charlemagne while cleansing Europe of certain Christian groups. But of these atrocities, none have equaled what the Islamic army had consistently done – and is doing to this day.

Much of this information is easy to verify. Unfortunately, few western leaders willingly discuss it openly. For whatever reason, they either ignore it or dismiss it with political rhetoric. If this blindness to history continues, terrorism will become a way of life, which will eventually plunge the civilized world into a Dark Age, in which Sharia Law in all its madness will rule supreme.

To understand why so little has changed over the years, why the pattern and goal remains the same, you must turn to the Koran for answers. The most quoted verse is Sura 9:5 (kill the disbelievers wherever you find them). Other verses worthy of note can be found throughout the book (Suras 4:84, 9:73, 9:123, etc.). Such encouragement has given Orthodox Muslims the justification they need to fight.

Although Western sympathizers defend the Muslims in general by pointing to those who have joined the mainstream of Western Civilization, none of these sympathizers will seriously acknowledge the possibility that many of them may be cells, ready to become human bombs at a moment’s notice.

Although, of course, not all Muslims are terrorists, the numbers that are are quite alarming. Conservative figures, for example, claim about 7 percent of the 2 billion Muslims around the world are jihadists; that’s about 140 million warriors for Allah. If you accept the figure that 25 percent of the Muslim population have admitted support of jihadist activities, the number of jihadists increases to about 500 million. Give them the atomic bomb, and you will have a conflagration you will never forget.

Some world leaders, by ignoring the past, would like us to believe that Islam is a religion of peace, but nothing about Islam's history suggests this. The Muslims have demonstrated repeatedly that Islam is a political ideology, disguised as a religion, committed to eliminating infidels. Anyone doubting this needs a fact-based history lesson.

Today in America, Britain and most other Western countries we are still governed by politicians and bureaucrats who refuse to identify the principal form of fanaticism that threatens us. We are governed by elites who hesitate to say -- if they ever say -- what distinguishes the current threat of our time, radical Islam, as the latest group of jihadists, ISIS, establishes beachheads in Syria and Iraq and plants its flag at the border of Jordan and Turkey. In the blancmange of political correctness, which this refusal entails, we hear of the threat of "extremism" and "radicalism" in general. This season there is even talk of "violent extremism" in particular, as though violent extremism is an event like the weather, which could affect almost any sufferer at any time.

Of course in some ways it is understandable that this pretence should have come about. Rightly, nobody should claim to be targeting all Muslims; so there is a nervousness about singling out what is different — namely, violence -- in one especially prominent ideology at the moment. Sometimes this nervousness, and the resultant spreading of blame, appear to be a justification. It did a few years ago when Anders Breivik in Norway appeared to some to have just demonstrated that anybody might be persuaded to plant car bombs in a city center or gun down innocent people in a youth camp. This horror, perhaps more than any other recent event, is wheeled out to assist those who wish to avoid the main issue. Our countries at the time were filled with claims that anybody who had ever been critical of radical Islam had in some way contributed to Breivik's non-Islamic atrocity. These claims often came from the same people who refuse to blame any wider circle of influence for the outrages of the jihadists. What was, and is, strangest here is that it fails to notice the two most important differences between mass-murderers, such as Breivik or Timothy McVeigh, and the rest of us -- and the difference between them and the sort of Islamists who have just killed three Israeli teenagers and threaten countries around the globe.

First, what distinguishes people of violence from everybody else is not their ideas or motivations but the act of violence itself. It is not the ideology of most mass murderers that distinguishes them. It is that they end up committing mass murder. Not to be too glib, there are people every day who feel like killing someone. What distinguishes the person who actually does kill someone is that they did so. High school killers have the same distinction. The opinions, tastes and despondency of such mass murderers are not always easily distinguishable from any other number of other unhappy and enraged teenagers. What distinguishes even high school shooters from their contemporaries is not their ideas, but that they end up shooting at, and killing, their classmates. So it is with political extremism. It is actually using the guns and the bombs that differentiate them from other people.

The second distinction, at least as important, and which we appear equally insistent on ignoring, is that while there are people who mass murder, one factor especially matters: whether around them are individuals, or a circle of individuals, who encourage them to mass murder.

Certainly there are people from all sorts of backgrounds and with all sorts of beliefs who can carry out acts of violence. This was demonstrated by Breivik, McVeigh and countless others. But as far as I know, Breivik's "influencers" or "inspirers" never included people who advocated placing car-bombs in public places or gunning down young political activists on an island.

This is a distinction that should matter. From the Palestinian territories, across the disintegrating Middle East, to certain mosques and madrassas in the West, just such teachings are emanating from the fringes of the Islamic world. The young men leaving Britain to go fight in Syria are not going in spite of the teachings of certain religious leaders but because of them. In the same way, terrorists in the West Bank do not target Jews for murder and abduction in spite of the urgings of the preachers of Hamas but because of them, and the culture of which they are a part.

We are so intent upon avoiding the problem of our time, radical Islam, that in one scenario we are willing to ignore the people who call for violence and murder, and on the other hand pretend that those who have never called for violence or murder have actually been calling for it all along. If any Muslim anywhere is attacked, the Western media is eager to attribute the fault to anybody who has ever analysed or even noticed radical Islam. They blame the person who has noticed the fire rather than tackling the fire that is being pointed to. Yet when that same fire is burning, when Christians, Jews, other Muslims, secularists and others are targeted around the world by Islamists, we remain intent on hoping that this urge has nothing to do with any of the texts or books or preachings or encouragements in the milieu from which the perpetrators come. And all this in spite of the circumstance that it is we in the West who are often the ones financing and legitimizing these people, and sometimes -- as with the Palestinian Authority -- even handing them the funds to target us with.

The wilful effort to ignore what is in front of our eyes, to cast blame where there is none and ignore it where there is, are not demonstrations of entirely wholesome societies. Rather, they are examples of societies suffering through a sickness. And if we cannot see our way through this, then it is this sickness that may yet prove to be the one historians in the future will recognize to have been terminal.

British Jihadists, Sharia Finance and "There is No Life Without Jihad"

Islam and Islam-related issues were omnipresent in Britain during the month of June 2014. They can be categorized into three broad themes: 1) The British government's growing concern over Islamic extremism and the domestic security implications of British jihadists in Syria; 2) The continuing spread of Islamic Sharia law in all aspects of British daily life; and 3) Ongoing questions of Muslim integration into British society.
1. Islamic Extremism and Syria-Related Threats

The dramatic rise of the Sunni militant group the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria [ISIS] in June added a new sense of urgency to the ongoing debate over how to prevent British jihadists from carrying out terrorist attacks in the UK upon their return from fighting in Syria.

British Prime Minister David Cameron warned on June 17 that British citizens and other Europeans fighting alongside Islamist insurgents in Iraq and Syria posed the biggest threat to Britain's national security.

Britain's top counter-terrorism officer, Cressida Dick, on June 22 told the BBC that roughly 500 Britons have now gone to fight in Syria. Speaking to BBC Radio 4's The World This Weekend, Dick warned that British jihadists represent a "long-term" terrorist threat that British police will be dealing with for "many years."

The former head of counter-terrorism at MI6, Richard Barrett, on June 22 told Sky News's Murnaghan program that as many as 300 radicalized young men had already returned to the UK. He said it was an "absolute nightmare" for security agencies because they do not have the resources to track all of them.

On June 17, the Daily Mail reported that more British citizens signed up to fight in Iraq and Syria than joined the Army Reserve during the past 12 months. Only 170 extra reservists enlisted over the past year, despite a government target to boost the stand-by force by 11,000 by 2018.

On June 22, the Financial Times reported: "The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has halved its counter-terrorism budget even as officials warn of the most severe threat to the UK from overseas terror groups since the London bombings in 2005."

On June 22, the Sunday Times reported that British jihadists are faking their deaths on the battlefield in Syria in an attempt to return to the UK undetected. In one instance, the martyrdom of a fighter in Syria was announced by his colleagues on social media, only for police to arrest the "dead" individual at the port town of Dover.

The Times also reported that a British jihadist using the nom de guerre Abu Rashash Britani recently posted a message on Twitter that said: "When we establish khilafah [an Islamic state], a battalion of mujahideen shud head to UK & capture David Cameron & Theresa May n behead them both "

Another jihadist from Birmingham named Junaid Hussain tweeted that the "black flag of jihad" will soon fly over Downing Street. He also tweeted: "Imagine if someone were to detonate a bomb at voting stations or ambushed the vans that carry the casted votes. It would mess the whole system up." Hussain re-tweeted a warning from a like-minded countryman for British people to "watch out," because "we'll come back to the UK and wreak havoc."

A 19-year-old jihadist from Portsmouth named Muhammad Hassan promised a "killing spree" of British citizens if he were ever to return to Britain.

In a June 22 interview with the Andrew Marr Show on BBC1, former British Defense Secretary Liam Fox said that given the increased threat to national security, the British state should be given more power to intercept the communications of Islamic extremists.

Home Secretary Theresa May, speaking at the annual Lord Mayor's Defense and Security Lecture in London on June 24, called for a change to British law that would hand the security services more powers to scrutinize online communications, a bid that has previously been blocked by the Liberal Democrats due to privacy concerns.

May also defended the government's use of surveillance powers. She said:

"There is no program of mass surveillance and there is no surveillance state. The real problem is not that we have built an over-mighty state but that the state is finding it harder to fulfil its most basic duty, which is to protect the public."

May's denial of the existence of a British "surveillance state" was contradicted by a senior official from her very own office.

A London-based group called Privacy International on June 17 published a 50-page document in which Charles Farr, the Director General of the Office for Security and Counter-Terrorism (a directorate within the Home Office which leads work on counter-terrorism in the UK), revealed a secret government policy justifying mass surveillance of UK residents.

In the document, Farr detailed how the Government Communications Headquarters [GCHQ], a British intelligence agency that works closely with the US National Security Agency, justifies the indiscriminate intercepting all online searches and electronic communications over Internet services such as Google, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Farr's statement marked the first time the government has openly commented on how it exploits the UK's existing legal framework for surveillance to intercept communications.

Meanwhile, the government said it was stepping up efforts to work with the Internet industry to remove Islamic extremist propaganda that is hosted in the UK or abroad. During a briefing on June 24, a government spokesperson said: "Since December [2013] we have removed over 15,000 pieces of terrorist-related content from the Internet."

The move came after three British jihadists appeared in a recruitment video urging their fellow countrymen to fight for ISIS in Syria and Iraq. The 13-minute English-language video entitled "There Is No Life Without Jihad" features one jihadist from Scotland and two others from Wales describing the life and mission of a jihadist.

The imam of the South Wales Islamic Center, Sheikh Zane Abdo, said he feared that the video would encourage other British Muslims to travel to Syria to fight. The imam said:

"I guarantee that many young people who are very susceptible to this type of message will have watched that video and maybe have been encouraged to now go and follow in the footsteps of Nasser and his brother, which is a real problem."

On June 24, the Daily Mail published a map showing how Cardiff, the capital of Wales, has become a hotbed for Islamic extremism. The article says Islamic hardliners are leafleting Muslim communities in the city with propaganda encouraging young men to become jihadists in Syria, Iraq and the UK.

Some of these meetings were allegedly organized by groups linked to Anjem Choudary, a Muslim hate preacher who wants to turn the United Kingdom into an Islamic state.

The Home Office said on June 26 that it was banning three groups linked to Choudary. The groups Need4Khilafah, the Shariah Project and the Islamic Dawah Association are all aliases of al-Muhajiroun, a Salafi-Wahhabi extremist group that was banned in 2006 but has continued to operate ever since then by using different names.

According to a report published by the Times of London on June 27, Choudary's network "has now been proscribed as a terrorist organization operating under 11 different names, but neither he nor any one of his associates has so far been prosecuted for membership of an illegal group."
2. Sharia Law in Britain

On June 25, Britain became the first Western nation to issue Islamic bonds, completing a plan that was more than seven years in the making. Investors placed £2.3 billion ($3.9 billion) of orders, more than 11 times the amount of bonds on offer.

Islamic bonds, known as sukuk, are structured to comply with Sharia law, which forbids interest payments. In practice, this means the bonds are backed by assets or cash flows that allow Muslim investors who are prohibited by Sharia law from buying traditional debt to share in profits or receive rental income.

This sukuk is using an ijara structure, a Sharia-compliant sale and lease-back contract, allowing the rental income of three central government offices to underpin the transaction. In an ijara sukuk, a party leases equipment, buildings or other facilities to a client for an agreed rental price.

The sukuk is the centerpiece of Prime Minister David Cameron's bid to turn London into a "world capital for Islamic finance."

But critics say that Cameron's ambition to attract investments from Muslim investors is spurring the gradual establishment of a parallel global financial system based on Sharia law.

On June 24, the Minister of State for Universities and Science, David Willetts, said that a Sharia-compliant alternative to the conventional student loan could become available in the UK beginning in 2016.

Willetts said a cooperative system called takaful was being examined as a way of enabling Muslim students to fund their studies according to Sharia law, which prohibits Muslims entering into interest-bearing loans.

Rather than borrowing money and paying it back with interest to a third party, which is prohibited by Sharia law, students would sign a contract promising to pay the takaful, perceived as a charitable donation.

"It would be a tragedy if any student, particularly a Muslim student because of concerns about so-called interest rates, were put off from going to university," Willetts said. "This does not mean we are introducing Sharia law in the UK," he added.

On June 10, Willis Group Holdings PLC, a multinational insurance brokerage company based in London, launched the UK's first Sharia-compliant commercial real estate insurance. The policy will retain price neutrality, meaning the premiums are equivalent to a like-for-like non-Sharia policy.

The Managing Director of the Willis Real Estate Practice, John Dilley, said:

"Hand in hand with the growth in Islamic finance is the demand for Sharia-compliant insurance cover, in particular for real estate investors. Access to underwriting capacity, which is compliant with Islamic law for major risks, has not previously been available in the UK. Willis has responded to the needs of real estate investors by developing the UK's first Sharia-compliant real estate insurance solution."

On June 6, the British Ministry of Defense (MoD), in response to a Freedom of Information request, admitted that soldiers are unknowingly being fed halal (Arabic for lawful according to Sharia law) meat on military bases.

On June 4, Gardner Asset Management and Shariyah Review Bureau [SRB], a Sharia advisory firm, announced the creation of an Enterprise Investment Scheme [EIS] that will allow Muslims to investment in a renewable energy project in a manner that complies with Sharia law.

The scheme will use an Islamic finance structure known as a wakala, whereby an agent is appointed by investors to manage and run the investment on their behalf, without using conventional interest-bearing debts within the company.

The CEO of London-based advisory firm Simply Sharia, Faizal Karbani, said: "This will be the first certified Sharia-compliant green energy EIS offered to UK investors and we think the structure of the investment fits well with the values and principles of Sharia."

Meanwhile, the Islamic Bank of Britain [IBB], the UK's only wholly Sharia-compliant retail bank, on June 23 named a new CEO. IBB's longest-serving employee, Sultan Choudhury, is being tasked with "delivering a strategy designed for growth and profitability." IBB has never made a profit since its founding in 2004.
3. Muslim Integration

British regulators placed five Muslim-dominated state schools in Birmingham under "special measures" after inspectors found that pupils there were being systematically exposed to radical Islamic propaganda.

Ofsted, the agency that regulates British schools, carried out emergency inspections of 21 primary and secondary state schools in Birmingham after a document surfaced in March 2014 that purported to outline a plot—dubbed Operation Trojan Horse—by Muslim fundamentalists to Islamize state schools in England and Wales.

The inspection reports, which Ofsted made public on June 9, show that Muslim hardliners are indeed seeking to run at least five state schools in Birmingham according to a "conservative Islamic perspective."

Sky News reported on June 3 that senior leaders at three schools in Birmingham alerted the government more than two decades ago about the rising influence of Muslim extremists in the school system, but that their concerns were dismissed because of political correctness.

Separately, the BBC reported on June 2 that Birmingham officials were warned that hardline Muslims were trying to extend their influence in Birmingham schools as early as 2008. Again, no action was taken.

On June 16, a new law entered into effect that makes forced marriage a criminal offense in England and Wales and is punishable by up to seven years in prison. The law also makes it a crime to breach a so-called Forced Marriage Protection Order (issued by courts to prevent people from being married against their will). This crime now carries a penalty of up to five years in prison.

In addition, the law makes it a crime to take British nationals overseas with the intention of forcing them to wed, even if the forced marriage does not ultimately take place. It is estimated that every year, hundreds of British girls are being taken out of school and flown abroad to be married, sometimes to men who may be two or three times their age.

Research commissioned by the UK Department of Education estimates that between 5,000 and 8,000 young women in Britain are the victims of forced marriages each year. But some charities say the actual number is far higher: many victims are afraid to come forward.

The BBC reported on June 12 that some Muslim families have begun hiring bounty hunters to track down the victims of forced marriage who try to run away. In one instance, parents in Scotland paid a gang to trace a 17-year-old woman who ran away from home after she was told she had to marry in Pakistan. The bounty hunters eventually found her and fearing for her life, she went through with the wedding in Pakistan.

Meanwhile, a radical Islamic group edged closer to building one of the world's largest mosques in London after a star Muslim opponent of the controversial mega-mosque was intimidated into silence.

Tablighi Jamaat -- a fundamentalist Islamic sect opposed to Western values such as democracy and equal rights, but committed to "perpetual Jihad" to spread Islam around the world -- is fighting a no-holds-barred battle to build a massive mosque complex in West Ham, a neighborhood in the East London Borough of Newham.

A public hearing was convened on June 3 to determine whether the mosque will be built. On the first day of the inquiry, however, Tehmina Kazi, the only Muslim brave enough to give evidence against the mosque, abruptly withdrew from giving testimony after being "persuaded" by Muslim hardliners to remove her objections.

By successfully silencing Kazi, Tablighi Jamaat removed a highly effective obstacle to making the mega-mosque a reality. All eyes will now be on Eric Pickles, a cabinet minister, who will take the final decision on whether the mosque project goes ahead.

In Scotland, the Glasgow City Council has authorized the Glasgow Central Mosque to broadcast the Islamic call to prayer -- known as the adhan -- during the Commonwealth Games, to be held in the city from July 23 to August 3.

The adhan will be broadcast once a day from July 10 to August 4 at approximately 10 pm. There will be some overlap with Ramadan, which began on June 28 and runs through July 27.

The general secretary of the mosque, Nabeel Sheikh, said he wants to cater to Muslims visiting the city for the Games. He also said the broadcast of the adhan would help to highlight the "open outlook" of Glaswegians. Sheik added:

"Many of our non-Muslim friends who have visited Dubai, Tunisia or Turkey and have heard the adhan have told me the positive impact it has had on them. The world's media will also be in Glasgow and they can leave with a positive impression of the city and emphasizing the tolerance and open outlook of Glaswegians."

In Edinburgh, a Muslim immigrant from Iran was found guilty on June 3 of murdering his wife because she refused to submit to his authority. Ahmad Yazdanparast, 61, was found guilty of the October 2013 murder of Ahdieh Yazdanparast, 46, the mother of his three children.

During Yazdanparast's trial at the High Court in Edinburgh, the court heard how he doused his wife with gasoline and set her on fire. Yazdanparast's defense attorney told jurors: "He wasn't being listened to, he wasn't being obeyed. He lost control of his wife and he murdered her."

Yazdanparast, who identified himself in court as a "British Muslim," said that in Iran the man was superior to the woman and had authority over her, but in Britain his wife had become too Westernized and was acting as if she were superior to him.

At the Woolwich Crown Court in Greenwich, a 20-year-old Muslim man, Farooq Shah, was found guilty on June 26 of stabbing to death a pregnant Romanian prostitute, allegedly because she was plying her trade near a mosque in Ilford, a town in Essex. He was sentenced to life in prison and will serve a minimum of 29 years.

At the Snaresbrook Crown Court in north London, the trial began on June 24 for five Muslim gang members accused of beating a 23-year-old American student, Francesco Hounye, over the head with a bottle. Prosecutors say the Muslims were angry that Hounye, who had been on a night out and was walking home with a friend in Shadwell, east London, was drinking alcohol on the street.

At the Central Criminal Court of England and Wales [Old Bailey] in London, a 32-year-old Islamic radical from Luton, Abu Rahin Aziz, was found guilty in absentia on June 19 of punching, kicking and striking a football fan named Andrew White and leaving him covered in blood.

The court heard how a group of nine Muslims were handing out Islamic literature and shouting "F*ck the Queen" as White lay bleeding on the ground. Aziz, an associate of firebrand cleric Anjem Choudary, fled the UK before his trial and is thought to have joined jihadists in Syria.

In a separate but related trial at the Old Bailey, nine members of the so-called Muslim Patrol were found guilty of promoting sectarian violence between Sunni and Shia Muslims at a protest march led by Choudary in central London. The brawls, which took place in May 2013, are believed to be the first Iraqi-style Muslim infighting on British streets.

In an interview published by the Daily Telegraph on June 17, the former head of the anti-immigrant English Defense League, Tommy Robinson, described the omnipresence of Islam at Woodhill Prison, a maximum security prison where he was serving an 18-month sentence for mortgage fraud.

Robinson, who was released in early June, says many prisoners are converting to Islam in order to become part of a Muslim gang, which gives them some degree of protection. He also says radical preachers are enforcing Sharia law in the prison wings. According to Robinson, "The guards don't run the prison, Islam does."

Finally, a Christian health worker launched a legal challenge after being disciplined by the National Health Service [NHS] for "bullying" a Muslim colleague by praying for her.

The saga began when the Muslim woman asked her colleague, a 37-year-old occupational therapist named Victoria Wasteney, about the anti-human trafficking community work being carried out by her church, located in East London, home to a large Muslim community.

Wasteney later invited the Muslim woman to a community sports day organized by her church. She also prayed for the Muslim woman, who was in tears over the many problems in her personal life.

Wasteney was issued a written warning and forced to accept a range of requirements designed to stop her from discussing her faith and beliefs with colleagues. She was also suspended on full pay for nine months.

Wasteney said she was challenging her employers in court because political correctness in the NHS was stifling ordinary conversations about faith. "I believe in tolerance for everyone and that is why I am challenging what has happened to me," she said.
