Why do dumb people think they are so smart? Science proves this is true.
First topic message reminder :
It is a proven fact that dumb people think they are smarter than they actually are. It's called the Dunning–Kruger effect:
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Dunning%E2%80%93Kruger_effect&oldid=612847043
Dunning and Kruger proposed that, for a given skill, incompetent people will:
1) tend to overestimate their own level of skill;
2) fail to recognize genuine skill in others;
3) fail to recognize the extremity of their inadequacy;
4) recognize and acknowledge their own previous lack of skill, if they are exposed to training for that skill.
Conversely, intelligent people tend toward underestimating their abilities and overestimating others' abilities.

Exelent post and i could not agree more jack of all trades master of none is bacicaly me all over ,sure i have qualifications but to say i was a master of any of them would be a stretchveya_victaous wrote:Tommy Monk wrote:All I've ever done on here is speak the truth and give my honest opinions.
I have also always been able to argue my points and provide evidence and logical reasoning in support.
Those unable to successfully argue against things I've said have resorted to insults, questioning my intelligence, knowledge and ability, or by just using the regular leftie SIXHIRB style put downs.
And flea keeper has never even dared to once engage in debate attempting to prove anything I've ever said here to be wrong, but instead just pops up every now and then declaring how wrong I am without any evidence or argument at all.
Regards to The op, most people will only understand intelligence by the confines of their own limited capacity.
And most people will think they are at the peak of intelligence because they cannot truly comprehend what a higher level of intelligence really feels like.
I think some people will find it harder to learn things That other more intelligent people will grasp much more easily so maybe they then have a bigger sense of achievement and view this achievement as being a bigger badge of honour than it might really be worthy of?
"...
I will agree that TM is pretty decent debater for the RW side when he wants to be.... but what's with all the line breaks
I think intelligent people understand how much they don't know.. also when you study to become an expert in something you realise it takes a lifetime and you still may not know everything about just the one thing you are an expert in (depending on the size and complexity of that thing). Part of that is also exposure because I am smart and got sent to a special school for the academically gifted I realise there are still people a lot Smarter than me because I went to school with them I was 90%+ student at normal school without really trying , I had to work to get 80% at the selective school
I definitely agree with the last point. which sort of relates to a philosophical query I have had.
Do people that are generally not good at stuff find it easier to stick at something when they do have some success with it?
Me and My sister in law were discussing it your see we both are the type of person that picks up a hobby easily get quite good at it (where people complement and we may even make some money) and then get bored and start a new hobby. So for example we can both play guitar but neither of us could stick to it long enough to get the whole 10,000 hours thing that they say you need to be an expert. it takes that next level of commitment to go from 'good' to 'great' I just wonder if it is easier to make that commitment if you normally don't have success and people don't say your good at that and you find something that people say your good at. I used the example of guitar because we have a friend that is Great at guitar at first he was just 'good' (he got no more praise than me) but he is literally always playing it its been 15 years and he is still at it all the time... but he was sort of always just average at any anything else. So did that make it easier for him to stick at it and get the 10,000 hours thing
i have noticed over the years that intelligence is like relativity ....it all depends on the observer.
Among my friends i am regarded as the harry potter of computer repair (i am not keen on the reference) however, there are people that could wipe the floor with me
but i do seem to have an innate ability to fix things anything really that has served me well over the years
I am versed in many subjects, but am no expert I have lots of hobby's, that all too often, when I get some success with. I get bored and lack the commitment to put in the hours needed
the amount of musical instruments I have is stupid and apart from the violin I can get a tune out of most of them with varying degrees of success
Electronics, radio, satellite equipment, computers, technology in general, I seem to have as I said a Nack with
that my friends think is a bit spooky but hey ho
The world is an interesting place and although a great deal of respect should be given to the people who have that commitment
i think you would miss a lot
And to be honest, I would rather be wise than smart

Jack of all trades master of none: yes. I'd take a fair bet I'm a bit like that.
I get kinda good at something and get restless and move on.
I was always told that was a terrible thing though?

depends, as long as you stick at one enough to get a career does it really matter?
Plus like KD implied to get the next level requires a commitment that means you may miss out on other things in Life. Personally I am happy being good at many things and master of none, because in many cases I am still the most skilled in the room... Unless the master happens to be there. again like KD said Most people still think your a wizard expect the guy the know the magic better than you
I just find it interesting that people that are not naturally/universally smart can end up being better at one specific thing then people that would out preform them in 99% of aptitude tests. I think it does raise questions about 'types of smart' is the intellect that people like me (and I am gonna say KD too) that allows us to learn quickly in most fields different than the intellect of someone that take a specific field to the extreme?

He does tend to speak the only truth he will understand. He tends to totally ignore science or evidence which even slightly contradicts his own fixed truth- He does it frequently when criticizing gay people but I've seen him do this on things like the moon landings (fake apparently)... he never offers anything new and just uses his same lines which apparently are so logical they cannot be disproven. This is what happens when people invest too much of their ego and self-worth into being right (if you ask me). A lot of people don't seem to realize they don't have to always be right in order to be worthwhile human beings.
I think I mentioned a friend before from my musician days, he always thought that whatever we were playing was the "right" music to play and anybody doing something different was to be bashed, sort of like low self-esteem with a militant element

I'll grant wolf spends too much time dishing out insults, however he isn't a bigot who tries to defend prejudice at every occasion.

In RL, I sometimes just nod along with people like that, I know their making a colossal arse of themselves, but they really think their impressing me....when they couldn't be further from the truth....
They will think that because they have given me one piece of information that is correct...that I will then believe anything they say...meantime they are really getting off on this, a wee bit like tossage the sausage, and I'll continue to act all impressed while they spew out lie after cringeworthy lie trying to 'keep me impressed"....
People like that can be so much fun, the last laugh is on them and they don't even know it
Some people are branded as daft if they don't know loads about every subject, but the truth is more like some people just aren't interested in every subject from science to Shakespeare....
I've never given a shit much myself as I'm sadly very easily bored!!....and much prefer taking about other things.

Yep...but it does seem to be a part of the human persona. I mean, even academics get into such debates about who is right or wrong.
