Vladimir Putin orders Russian troops onto 'combat alert' as Ukraine fighting spills across border

Vladimir Putin has ordered troops in central Russia onto “combat alert” in snap military drills a day after confirming the country is beefing up its presence on the Ukrainian border. The move, which will not affect troops stationed on the Ukrainian border, follows a series of reports of fighting in eastern Ukraine spilling over the frontier into Russia. Announcing the move on Saturday morning Sergei Shoigu, the Russian defence minister, said the drills would run from June 21 to June 28.

“In accordance with [Mr Putin’s] order, from 11.00am Moscow time the troops of the central military district as well as formations and military units on its territory have been put on full combat alert,” Mr Shoigu said.

While Russia’s Central Military District does not border Ukraine, the move will be seen as another show of force as tensions between Moscow and Kiev continue to mount.

I'm reliably informed (not by GLP! - by a friend who works with a certain news agency) that they are now saying this is a full-on military combat alert. A formal war footing rather than how they have been wording it over the last few days about alert for exercises. They are openly calling it a war alert. Feel free to make your usual 'that's bullshit' remarks, but all I'll say is - watch this space.

Not this time Didge. Still, time will tell. There's the great distraction of the Iraq situation remember, and Ramadan starts next weekend but I don't know how that'll affect the Iraqis, do you? Anyway, I'm more than usually certain that Russia will be on an official war footing very shortly.

No I didn't contradict myself! You said they're only flexing their muscles and I said not this time, meaning this time it's for real. Anyway, about Iraq - do you think ISIS will hold back during Ramadan, or will they carry on or what? Just curious...

They will continue I reckon, and I think this is a perfect opportunity to take out many extremists, while they think they are winning, they will become over confident.

In your opinion, I find the fact that 7000 fighters will become very stretched soon in their operations, but then you have no idea of logistics I guess and how thinly thy will now be on the ground to hold their recent possessions. You see you only look at things in 2 dimensions and would mean you would make for a poor military strategist.

The best thing for the Iraq's at the moment is to defend and build up their forces so that they are in a position to go onto the offensive and that will take time, but the more gains ISIS have, the more they will be further stretched to hold onto them as they do not have the numbers, hence why they are using areas in Syria as safe havens.
