PSE team calls on government to tackle rising deprivation
The percentage of households who fall below society’s minimum standard of living has increased from 14 per cent to 33 per cent over the last 30 years, despite the size of the economy doubling. This is one of the stark findings from the largest study of poverty and deprivation ever conducted in the UK.
Other key figures reveal that almost 18 million people cannot afford adequate housing conditions; 12 million people are too poor to engage in common social activities; one in three people cannot afford to heat their homes adequately in
Researchers from the University of Bristol, Heriot-Watt University, the Open University, Queen's University Belfast, University of Glasgow, University of Oxford, University of Birmingham, University of York, the National Centre for Social Research and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency found that:
• About 5.5 million adults go without essential clothing.
• Around 2.5 million children live in homes that are damp.
• Around 1.5 million children live in households that cannot afford to heat their home.
• One in four adults have incomes below what they consider is needed to avoid poverty.
• One in every six (17 per cent) adults in paid work are poor.
• More than one in five adults have had to borrow in the last year to pay for day to day needs.

As the report says:
“The Coalition Government aimed to eradicate poverty by tackling the causes of poverty. Their strategy has clearly failed. The available high quality scientific evidence shows that poverty and deprivation have increased since 2010, the poor are suffering from deeper poverty and the gap between the rich and poor is widening.”
So much for the recovery and we're all in this together patter.

5.5 million adults go without essential clothing?
Tons of clothing is put into clothes banks every month - i see them overflowing.
Damp homes? How damp? We have damp in our home - in the porch - no problem. So 2.5 million - i'll bet 100, the worst ones might affect the health of the children.
1.5 million can't afford to heat their home - possibly, but so what.
one in four adults have incomes below what they consider is needed - i'd have expected it to be higher - ask anybody if they want more money the answer is usually yes.
one in every six adults is poor - who the flip says?
one in five had to borrow - every single person i know has borrowed.
NEXT!

We're one of the wealthiest countries in the world and we should expect better than that. Just because you are in the same boat as the report outlines doesn't mean that it is acceptable in this day and age.
What you have just written is exactly what this lot in power want to hear.
Just doff that cap and tug your forelock and get on with it,,,,,,right?

It would be nice to see improvements.
I was just putting things in to perspective - a little bit of truth often helps in these situations.
Now, where is all this wealth going? As we all know, the ones who produce it are, if they pay their taxes, handing a lot of money over to the government - could we be spending too much abroad?

It's more likely that it's a case of the tax that isn't paid that is more the problem. You know, all the dosh that is stashed abroad in havens and the tax that is funneled out of the country by major corporations. All those who need to use our public services but they don't want to pay for them.
Let's just blame it all on the sick, the poor, the disabled, the unemployed and the immigrants whilst the robber barons who stole our money are laughing in our faces convincing us that we are in this together.

I'm the biggest and loudest to shout about tax dodgers.
I couldn't agree more - everybody should pay every penny they owe in tax.
And benefits should only be paid to those who need them.
I think our current government do have a multi-pronged approach actually Iron - sort out the tax dodgers and sort out the benefits system.
