 She strongly believed that freedom only comes with corresponding responsibility, a notion which underpinned the principles of empowerment of the individual and reduction of the role of government.
In this time of crisis and confusion, when skepticism and relativism run rampant, her figure is remembered with renewed admiration by those of us who consider ourselves freedom-loving people. Her determination, unashamed classical liberalism, and contempt for what is commonly known as “political correctness”, would be extremely helpful to overcome the difficulties we Europeans are currently undergoing. In short, a champion of freedom.
José María Aznar was Spanish prime minister from 1996 to 2004.
