EU Gas Fears As Russia Cuts Ukraine Supply
Russia's Gazprom acts after a deadline expires in its fight to recover billions of dollars from Ukraine in unpaid gas bills.
A source at Gazprom was quoted by the news agency Reuters as saying that it had now "restricted" supplies while the company filed a lawsuit in Stockholm demanding immediate payment of the full amount.
The EU gets about one third of its gas from Russia and around half of that comes through pipelines that cross Ukraine.
Gazprom said supplies for the EU were still being sent through the country despite the dispute.
"The gas for European consumers is being delivered at full volume and Naftogaz Ukraine is required to transit it," Gazprom spokesman Sergei Kupriyanov told reporters.
The developments follow the failure of EU-sponsored talks in Kiev aimed at reaching a settlement between Russia and Ukraine.
The European Commission said it was "convinced" a solution to the bitter dispute was possible, averting a deepening of the wider crisis over Ukraine's future that has seen East/West relations deteriorate to levels not seen since the Cold War.
The EU had proposed a compromise package requiring Ukraine to pay $1bn immediately with the balance settled through six additional payments by the year's end.
Alexei Miller, Gazprom's chief executive, accused Kiev of adopting an "unconstructive" position at the talks and of using blackmail to try to get an "ultra-low" price.
The EU said it would try to get both sides together again for talks later this month, warning that a lack of a deal could have an impact on European supplies heading into the winter months.

Good job it's not mid winter and they have time to get back round the table.

Re: EU Gas Fears As Russia Cuts Ukraine Supply
Not as simple as it appears:
Just how much gas does Britain import from Russia?
The simple question is a complicated one to answer because of the myriad of pipelines and interconnections that tie together Europe’s energy industries and utilities. Created over the past couple of decades as part of a grand European project to roll back borders and liberalise markets, it was envisaged that cross-border pipelines would allow for the free flow of gas while providing long-term cheap supplies of energy for the region’s consumers.
In reality it has failed, and in the case of the UK it has created a situation where there is some uncertainty about where exactly the gas we import via a pipeline from Holland originates. Some reports claim Russia supplies 15pc of the UK’s gas and others suggest the country is currently importing none from Moscow’s state-controlled energy companies.
Even Britain’s largest utility, Centrica, doesn’t know how much of the natural gas generating our electricity and heating our homes is Russian. The company signed a deal in 2012 with the UK marketing arm of Russia’s state-controlled energy giant Gazprom for the supply of 2.4bn cubic metres of gas over three years. Reports on Friday suggested this gas was already being pumped into the country via the Dutch pipeline. However, a spokesperson from Centrica vigorously denied the rumour being spread by analysts to explain a sudden increase in volumes of gas flowing the through the pipeline, which runs under the North Sea.
According to Cenrtica, supplies from Gazprom won’t begin until October. The British utility is also at pains to stress that it doesn’t know whether the Russian company will import the fuel from its vast fields in Siberia, or simply supply gas it has bought on the open European market. If knowledge is power then Cenrica’s lack of information about where Britain’s gas will come from in the future is a concern.
The last time Russia played power politics with gas in 2009 over Ukraine and disrupted a pipeline to Europe, prices jumped by 17pc in the UK. Although stockpiles are now higher, because of an unusually warm winter, the impact of Russia turning off the gas would still probably result in energy prices rising overnight.
With Ukraine now warning that Vladimir Putin could use energy as a “new nuclear weapon” more information is needed on exactly where Britain’s gas comes from especially as imports will acount for 70pc of supply by 2020.

So it appears the people that supply our gas don't know where it comes from!!!!!
