"Major New Study" Confirms "Liberal Political Class" Is Fuelling Anti-Immigrant Sentiment

Politicians have contributed to a rise in anti-immigrant sentiment because of a widening “disconnect” between the “liberal political class” and public opinion, the UK’s most authoritative barometer of public opinion suggests.
Almost half the population now believes that a decade of mass migration has not only harmed the economy but undermined “British culture”, the annual British Social Attitudes survey shows.
The “persistent public anxiety” over immigrant numbers is something the main political parties “ignore at their peril”, the Government-funded study warns.
Significantly, the study — which has been charting public opinion for more than 30 years — found signs of a rejection of a multicultural notion of Britishness.
In striking contrast with a decade ago, when the survey showed rising acceptance of minorities, increasing numbers now single out factors such as being born in the UK or having “British ancestry” as important elements of “British” identity.
The news led to warnings on Monday that a failure to slow the pace of immigration to Britain will increase racism.

Almost half hey, just shows you what continued propaganda by the DM and Express can do.
However, the young seem to have their heads screwed on:
First-time voters want Britain to remain a haven for refugees
YouGov poll shows 8 out of 10 people are proud of Britain's legacy of protecting those fleeing violence, war and persecution
An overwhelming majority of young voters wants Britain to maintain its tradition of offering sanctuary for refugees, according to a poll that challenges the political belief that an anti-asylum ticket will woo the electorate.
Eight out of 10 people who will be eligible to vote for the first time next May said they were proud of Britain's legacy of protecting people fleeing violence, war and persecution, while three-quarters urged the government to maintain the UK's reputation for offering a haven for people, particularly children.
The poll – released to coincide with Refugee Week, which starts on Monday – examined the attitudes of the 3.3 million people who could vote for the first time next year and, with 1.35 million indicating that they will definitely vote, groups are using the findings to demand politicians reconfirm their commitment to asylum seekers.
Support for protecting child refugees is most robust among next year's potential debut voters, with 82% in favour. An accompanying poll of British adults aged over 21, also by YouGov, revealed that nearly seven in 10 believe that Britain should be proud of its history of offering protection to refugees; only 15% disagreed.
Refugee Council chief executive Maurice Wren said: "Our heritage of offering safety to those in need is just as vital today as it was in the past, with the Syrian conflict fuelling the greatest refugee crisis of our time.
"Over the last decade, some feared that Britain's commitment to protecting and supporting refugees – children and adults – might be weakening. This new poll finds that it's actually getting stronger. Protecting and helping vulnerable people is an intrinsic part of being British."

The young tend to be the ones who have it right here, too. The big difference here is, we call the DM "Fox News" (or any number of slurs)

I may get banned for this but forgive me if I chose not to be lectured by arrogant leftie Americans the home of the KKK and all manner of Red Necks. In the 40s the Brits showed a great deal more liberal views to the African Americans than the Americans did when they were fighting the Germans. Indeed even now in the Southern state and probably in wider USA you have more racism than we do. Yes we have real concerns about Islam but that pales compared to the outright segregation still practiced in the good old USA. BOLLOCKs
Really Ben you are blind to the faults and clearly see us Brits as pariahs.

What other view would anyone get by reading some of the British contributions to this forum, but that Britain is full of humourless racists who think the only people fit to walk the earth are white british. If you want Ben and other no Brits to think different, some of you need to change what you post.

Well done yet another Guardian article. The Liberal left promoting the problem trust you to miss the point Spassy. They are the mouthpiece of the Liberal left.
For 40 years plus the left have suppressed debate on immigration labelling everyone who wished to discuss it a racist.
That is the measure of you lefties your intolerance is supreme. Just because others in a majority I might add are concerned about immigration you spassy woman doesn' men they are racist it means you are bigoted because you think anyone who disagrees with you is wrong.

Re: "Major New Study" Confirms "Liberal Political Class" Is Fuelling Anti-Immigrant Sentiment
Here you go, as you obviously need an education:
As the chart below shows, debt has increased massively in recent years, doubling to more than £1tn in the past five years, largely due to the financial crisis and resulting recession.
An easy way to compare debt levels across different countries is to express debt as a percentage of total economic output, or GDP, which is why you'll hear commentators regularly talk about the debt -to-GDP ratio. Obviously this has risen sharply since 2007.
And, according to the Office for Budget Responsibility, the UK's stock of debt will keep on rising for a number of years. So if anyone tries to tell you that UK debt is falling, they are wrong.

If you listened Spassy you would know I think this coalition has been lead far too much by a lefty liberal Clegg and Co. There are far too many pro EU PC idiots at the top many Tories are being silenced as well. At the moment the only people being heard are you lefties who are anti democratic the pendulum s swinging.
Eventually even arrogant politicians have to begin to hear the electorate. You and your liberal left cohort will be left behind and pilloried for the pillocks you are.

Re: "Major New Study" Confirms "Liberal Political Class" Is Fuelling Anti-Immigrant Sentiment
Actually all this shows is how susceptible to media stories the general public is, what the report failed to even ask about where their opinion and vies generally come from, that speaks volumes of the power of the media and web to gain popularity to a cause, especially during and after a recession. As seen here, what are people doing who back this view?
Scapegoating.
Look at what has been said that people believe immigration has been bad for the economy, now where does such views come from if not the media and web itself? People do not form these views or could ever view such views on their own, unless they have been influenced by others. Thus there is much to be said for those who play on the fear and susceptibility of people which draws some people to poor an incorrect conclusions

Do you believe that all views and opinions are formed by the media Didge?
Do you believe that if the Daily Mail didn't have an article about the bad economy, nobody would have a clue?
Do you never leave your house? Do you pay your bills? Do you work, have you applied for jobs, been to the job centre? Do you talk to other people who are "living"?
No? Oh, you just read the Mirror and Huffington Post? That explains it all then.

What a silly counter and clearly you cannot grasp what I said, people in your first post claim immigrants have been bad for the economy, well many studies show the opposite, but some of the media give the opposite impression, so how would you know about whether immigrants were good for the economy, unless you have studied all the reports an come to your own conclusions? Are you saying everyone has done this, even though the vast majority show immigration has helped the economy?
Thus are people going off what they read in the media?
I do not just read the media, which goes a long way to show you are pretty much a dummy at times when it comes to matter like this, but please at least show some intelligence here
I know you are a tad slow, but it may help if you actually understand what was polled, so if immigration has been beneficial economically, then where are people get the wrong views on this then?

What was that old quote? Never mind, I found it:
"Let me make the songs of a nation, and I care not who makes its laws." - Andrew Fletcher
If you don't see that the Daily Mail and allies are trying to make the UK's songs, you're missing an essential part of what's going on today.

Texas is bigger than the whole of the UK. So in other words, we have a limited amount of space and a limited infrastructure that simply can't support an unlimited number of people. So immigration HAS to be cut somewhere along the line or the whole of this country will have to be concreted over to accomodate 200+ million people. To dismiss concerns over the numbers of immigrants coming here as 'racist' is childish and doesn't fool many people anymore.

Yes only 7% urbanized, we have a very long way to go before we run out of space or even concreted over.
Nobody does deny genuine concerns, they do however show up those of which are racist and most people do not have an issue with controlled immigration, but many arguments do not tend to be based on sound logical reasoning as seen.

I stand by what I said.
It was about getting more blacks and other ethnics into university.
We all know who they are talking about when they say 'poor and disadvantaged'.
It's only today where poor performance by some white kids is being acknowledged and talk of actually doing something about it.
If only they had the same level of money given to them than all the black and ethnic 'poor and disadvantaged' schools were given over the last labour govt.....

Then you confirm you are a racist as it had nothing to do with the colour of skin or ethnic minorities.
Again everything to you has to do with skin colour, only you came up with the racist answer, nobody else

Who is the real racist...???
Someone who surports a meritocracy resulting in whatever colour university graduates are.
Or someone who wishes to lower the entry requirements for only.some 'poor and disadvantaged'(read black and ethnics) so as to socially engineer the ethnic make up of universities so there are more black and ethnics in there at the expense of others who had higher grades and were denied????
I pick the first option.
You and your leftie 'progressive' scum bags will ost for the second option.
Because you are the real racists and think skin colour is more important than actually getting the correct grades...!!!!

You see you only see blacks as disadvantaged showing how ignorant and racist you are again when many whites are disadvantaged also, so how would this be advantaging only ethnic minorities when it woul also advantaged many whites? You see this is why you are a dumb racist, as seen your views do not hold up to scrutiny

Re: "Major New Study" Confirms "Liberal Political Class" Is Fuelling Anti-Immigrant Sentiment
The first option is not flawed at all, it is the best system to allow those who meet the grade to apply. Regardless of ethnicity.
We know that the most so called poor and deprived areas are full of blacks and other ethnics.
We know that blacks and some other ethnics are the most least likely to get to university or achieve a degree.
And we know that whenever the govt or any otherr quango or think tank talks about the 'poor and disadvantaged' is really talking about blacks and ethnics.
That has been the same for years and years.
Holding some to lower standards is wrong. As it will disadvantage others who have made the grades.
If some have not made the grade then the simple answer is that they should study harder and retake the exams and then reapply.
Then if they don't make the grade again, then maybe they are just not cut out for it and not good enough academically.
If they can't pass the A levels then they aren't going to get anywhere near a degree....
