Government asked to give Meriam Ibrahim asylum
The government has been called upon to give Meriam Ibrahim, the women sentenced to death in Sudan for refusing to renounce her Christian faith, and her children immediate refugee status during the House of Lords oral questions session on 10 June 2014.
Crossbench peer Lord Alton of Liverpool said providing Mrs Ibrahim with asylum would offer an "unequivocal demonstration of the value of a civilised country and a humane society."
Sudan's appeals court is considering the case of Mrs Ibrahim, despite assurances from the country's government that she would be freed.
Mrs Ibrahim was sentenced to the death penalty in May after refusing to renounce her Christian faith whilst 8 months pregnant. Her case received international condemnation after she was forced to give birth in prison while restrained by shackles.
If the sentence is not overturned, Mrs Ibrahim will be subjected to 100 lashes and hanged.
Lord Alton called the treatment of Mrs Ibrahim "emblematic" of a regime which "systematically murders and mistreats its own people."
Responding for the government Foreign Office spokesperson Baroness Northover avoided directly addressing Lord Alton's request but told the House that the government was in talks with the Sudanese Government about securing Mrs Ibrahim's release.

As seen on the news reports worldwide and on, social media - including on here - the safety and well-being of this woman has been a concern to us all so let’s hope the government succeeds in its talks with the Sudanese government. I’m sure we would all want that to happen so that this woman and her family can be rescued and brought to safety and refuge where Meriam Ibrahim and our country would be seen as a beacon of hope and a shining light in what otherwise is a sea of darkness for those who may suffer in the future from the kind of cruel and barbaric justice being handed out to them.

This poor lady should be given asylum, indeed.
Are the other muslim countries not up in arms about this, offering her a good home?

Just her, or are we going to be offering it to all the women in that position now and in the future.? Together with their husbands and families, you know the ones who stand there and watch this happen and call for hanging like her brother did? You can bet your pension his attitude would sharp change at the mention of asylum. Any way he has American citizenship, why dont they go there if she is released?

Do we have a list of all countries which have made this offer?

But if our government were successful and she came here and applied for asylum would you be against it? After all there was much concern on here for this woman's well-being.
Open question to all....

I would be fine with that Irn, after what she has been going through, and I'm not so sure about Sudan or some other surrounding countries being 'safe'.
She would be safe as can be here though.

If any woman had been sentenced to death by a barbaric law for a crime such as this woman has then I would have no problem with her coming to this country and claiming asylum and I would expect our government to approve it.
You?

Re: Government asked to give Meriam Ibrahim asylum
Being against a clearly wrong miscarriage of justice and seeking to get it overturned is one thing, allowing her to then come here through asylum rules is another.
I am of course in favour of the former, but not the later.
If the first is achieved then she is free and safe where she is.
And should go to S. Sudan if she wants.
Not here.

Agreed Irn. Amazing how they all showed such concern until that came up
You can just hear the chorus of yes but, no but, anything but that but!

Concern for overturn of miscarriage of justice, yes.
I would also like to see her awarded some compensation from the authorities there.
Not a reason to come here.
Quite simple.

Just as I thought. Care enough about her but not enough to accept her here and save her from a death sentence imposed on her by a barbaric court decision.
Knew it - just knew it.
