Former students face thousands in interest payments under loan changes

Australian government’s proposed higher education changes could hit those already in the workforce

Australians who finished university courses five years ago face an extra $2,000 to $5,000 in interest payments on their student loans as a result of government changes, new modelling shows.

Most of the federal government’s higher education proposals will affect only new students, but increases to the interest rate on higher education loan program (Help) debts will hit students and graduates already in the workforce.

From June 2016 the government plans to charge interest on debts at the 10-year bond rate up to a cap of 6%, rather than indexing the loan at the consumer price index (currently 2.9%).

New modelling showing graduates who are already in the workforce will pay thousands of dollars extra as a result.

Looks like they may well have.

All the governments appear to be infected with the same lethal disease. Just look at decision makers with the puppet leaders worldwide. They all seem have the same symptoms, to me. ALL self obsessed, greedy, heartless with some of them having some very obvious, serious mental conditions.

Gough Whitlam's government made University study "free" from 1973...

WHEN I was studying at the Hawkesbury campus of the University of Western Sydney from 1977-79 the education was still "free" for Aussie students who qualified for entry to those courses (there were still the accommodation costs and living expenses; an "up front fee" of around $100+ and student association and student "union" fees brought that to around $200-250 a year; and text books, stationery and travel costs ☞ so there were those associated costs even back then..).

The Hawke-Keating Labor regime introduced 'Higher Education Contribution Scheme' (HECS) co-payment fees in the late 1980s, where the students were billed for a percentage of the course costs at low interest rates, that became repayable when taxable income reached a level roughly equal to the 'average national wage' (currently just over $50k p.a.). I accrued a HECS debt of just over $3,000 for part-time studies at Newcastle Uni' between 1988 and '91.. study

The Howard and Rudd-Gillard gov'ts subsequently raised the co-contributions to just over 20% of the course costs, and the interest to just over 2% currently.

The Rabbitt-Hockey plans are unfair and restrictive for future students on multiple fronts :
* Hockey suggested in his Budget preamble that he would like to increase the co-contribution to a whopping 50% of course costs ! (and this from government ministers who received either fee-free education, or under the earlier HECS rules..);
* Increase the interest rates up to "Bond Market" levels;
* Make interest increases retrospective for former and existing students back to 2010 (!!!);
* Hockey and Education Minister Pyne have also suggested allowing universities to set their own fee levels, as well ~ potentially leading to the creation of $100,000 HECS fees for studying the likes of a Medical or Veterinary course from the top Uni's at some future date, if the Tories had their evil way ! Shocked

FORTUNATELY, it can't really be said that Oz has yet succumbed to "the Tory Disease", as not only did they only receive 45.5% of the 'Primary' votes last September, but their public support has fallen to less than 25% in a poll taken only a fortnight ago.. pirat

NOT only have the majority of governments in both the "First World" and Developing countries apparently caught this malady, but they also have several signs and symptoms in common :

* They all make the "economy" the single leading issue in their governance these days ~ rather than the welfare of the people, their communities, the local and interconnected environments, and the national health;

* Most of the top governments still follow the failed and miserable "Economic Rationalist" nominally "free market" models, developed from the Reagonomics/Thatcherism debacles of the 1980s;

* Despite claiming that the "markets" should be allowed to determine the levels of supply, employment and incomes, these "supply side" oriented governments have consistently gone out of their ways to interfere with both the markets, the local communities and the environment, in order to favour the profits of the multinational corporations that have "bought" them over the past three decades Twisted Evil

* Most of these governments can be fairly considered as right-leaning and "conservative" in their operations and attitudes these days, by the international and long term definitions and understandings - even most of the remaining nominally "Labour", "Socialist" and "Communist" parties that still hold power in their respective countries.

* And to make the inhumane and cruel "austerity" measures of these corporatist lapdog governments more acceptable to much of their citizenry, we also see the parallel interference and propaganda from such traitorous "5th columnist" news outlets as the Murdoch Press, FauxNews, CNN, Fleet Street, any of the corporate/private US, Canadian and Oz TV networks ~ with their constant demonising and dehumanising attacks against the poor, the sick, the disabled, the unemployed, the disenfranchised ~ attempting to claim that "their misfortunes are all their own faults.." !!!

Yeah there are significant protests and it all might get blocked in the senate, Tony now has the lowest approval rating of all time. If an election were held today the RW would be annihilated with only 30% of the vote.

He is getting hammered on all sides, I can't see them getting a 2nd term ::D::

The Australian Sex Party have a commendable political platform full of socially progressive values. But, naturally, some pretty great branding as well.

Their response to Joe Hockey's budget isn't exactly the Keating zinger-chocked reply Bill Shorten gave, but it gets right to the heart of the matter: pretty much everyone but chaplains and rich folks are fucked.

Of course they don't actually use the word. Presumably like real sex parties, the Australian Sex Party is actually quite polite. Probs best to get your headphones nonetheless.

THOSE first two characters on that video look to me like they might have been recruited from "The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence"...

I remember seeing 4 or 5 of them at a time moving around in the crowds at a couple of street markets down around the 'Cross and Paddington back in the late '80s or early '90s..
