You don't know how good you have it!

This is about a half year old, but it's fascinating to look at how long it used to take to travel from one city to another in the U.S.:

Here's a sample map, showing how long it would take to get to various destination from NYC in 1800:

we got some interesting ones in outer sydney.

there are these all-purpose buildings (church/jail/post office/Pub/general store) located a full day's horse ride apart expanding out from Parramatta. the ones still around are almost all Pubs now. Nice Old Sandstone buildings. but it is a reminder that what now takes an hour in the car used to be a full days ride.

Look, I don't want to be that guy. This gravely dire situation is OBVIOUSLY direly grave, and I'm not going to sugarcoat it.

But it does remind me of this old, wizened fart who used to live around the corner from me when I was just a child. He used to say, all the time, "BUY ME PICKLES, WON'T YOU? I'M JUST AN OLD ENGLISH MAN WHO NEEDS TO SELL 'E'S PICKLES LIKE A LEOPARD NEEDS 'E'S STRIPES, AIN'T I?"

Funny thing was, he'd never left Texas his entire life.
