Sports Drink Firm Set To Advertise On The Moon
Otsuka Pharmaceutical, the maker of Pocari Sweat, is to land a branded can of its popular drink onto the Moon next year.
A Japanese sports drink manufacturer is to become the first company to advertise on the Moon.
Otsuka Pharmareutical, the maker of Pocari Sweat, is to land a branded can of its popular drink onto the Moon next year.
The drink will be packed in powder form inside a special titanium can designed to endure the impact of launch and landing.
It will also be able to withstand temperature shifts and the higher levels of electromagnetic radiation from the sun.
Messages from 38,000 children from Japan and overseas will be inscribed on the can, which will weigh around 1kg.
Company vice president Masayuki Umeno said: "This capsule was created by bringing together elements of Japan’s craftsmanship."
The project is a joint venture with US firm Astrobotic Technology, and Singapore-based Astroscale.
The itinerary for the trip was released on Thursday.
It revealed the 384,000km trip will take four days.
Once on the Moon, Astrobotic's Griffin lander will take the can to the Lacus Mortis pit and place it on the ground.
Otsuka has not revealed how much the publicity stunt will cost.
