Australia shark cull: Government destroys 50 sharks in trial programme – but fails to catch a single great white blamed for fatalities
More than 170 sharks have been caught and 50 destroyed as part of Australia’s controversial culling policy, government figures have revealed.
Officials said the programme was “successfully restoring confidence” among beachgoers in Western Australia, but opponents have been critical after it emerged that the animals caught did not include a single great white – the species most often blamed for fatal attacks.
The trial scheme involved placing drum lines along seven of the state’s most popular beaches, and while tiger sharks were the most commonly caught there were also five protected makos, four of which were either killed or found already dead on the line.

Yeah there are other sharks that can kill humans..even the Bull shark.
I guess the government have a duty to keep people safe , but only at the expense of killing sharks ...
Surely a safety zone with steel fencing in the water can keep the sharks out and people safe?
It has to be better than killing the sharks?

I've gotta say I thought the Aussies was better than this. As one of the comments points out they do a great job helping to protect the Whale, so what the hell is this about ?

That's what I thought - and if they hadn't polluted the oceans with oil spills, garbage and fallout from Fukushima, the sharks wouldn't have to come so far inland looking for food.

...there's so much truth to that Tess, it's a shame that these beautiful big creatures are being culled..
I might tell Fergal Sharkey about this, he likes and knows a lot about sharks.

From the link.
Doesn't look like it's improved safety a great deal, also there's a lot of unhappy Aussies about this.
Greens MP Lynn MacLaren told Australia’s ABC News that tiger sharks had not been implicated in a human fatality for almost 100 years, and that reducing their numbers “does nothing to improve beach safety”.

It's such a shame, humans believe that the oceans are nothing more than their very own swimming pools.
You wouldn't go play footy in South Africa, with a pride of Lions, watching nearby.
Swimming in the oceans are the risk you take. Killing the animals that are in their own environment is wrong. We are the trespassers.

...don't you worry Stephen..Ausssies will do what they do best..
They will go for a morning swim, catch up on neighbours and home and away, feed the Kangarooos in the garden, stick on the barbie and have a tin of Foster's.
..try not to worry about it.

Surely there must be some other way of making sharks keep their distance, some underwater high pitched sounding device maybe?

I thought they were more into Nick Cave and AC/DC than Neighbours, and more likely to catch a wave surfing than swimming before the Barbie ?Joy Division wrote:Stephenmarra wrote:From the link.

Absolutely Harry. They always used to enclose swimming areas with a net. They obviously can't do that for surfing, so the sharks have to suffer

Re: Australia shark cull: Government destroys 50 sharks in trial programme – but fails to catch a single great white blamed for fatalities
It is just the Western Australian State.
Things like sound have been investigated they don't really work mainly because the sharks are there because of the fish (important breeding zone for many species) SO doing something like that has devastating consequences for other species. I don"t agree in general and just say "Pffft the Surfers Know what they are doing when they swim out there" but the Idea is that by using Very large Hooks only Large Sharks will be caught... it is possibly better than the Netting method used on the east coast (which is known to catch things other than sharks too, they do try and release them... but budget compared to the amount they of netting they have to patrol means that there is always some loses)
Even in WA this drum line program has not got much support..... But a Few scaredy cat RW that don't even surf got all up in Arms about Dangerous sharks....
And also Outside of Australian waters there are almost gone
http://www.treehugger.com/natural-sciences/first-census-of-great-white-sharks-counts-only-219-individuals-a-species-in-peril-video.html
but from 60 baited lines of the WA coast in one summer we caught over 100
http://www.abc.net.au/news/201-04-08/wa-govt-seeks-to-extend-shark-drum-line-program/5375722
Like Whales part of the Issue is We are the one of the only ones that have looked after our waters enough to support these animals.

Not sure about using them on hips and though , could lead to possible health risks,,but I can see why some people would use them having anti social people hanging around their property.

Agreed. They should be banned - do the greedy morons not realize that if you scof all the food in the larder there'll come a day pretty soon when there's nothing left, and no way of growing/breeding a new supply?Lone Wolf wrote:Tesstacious wrote:

TALKING of sharks coming inland...
I saw a young bull shark down in the creek here, only a couple of months ago..
I wish I'd had a camera with me at the time, just to snap a few mementoes ~ and provide me with some actual proof of my serendipitous encounter.
AND by the way, Tess' ~ the main reason that sharks may run short of food in some regions isn't from the pollution (as bad as it is..) ~ but overfishing of the oceans by fleets of monster long-lining and line-hauling ships feeding their "floating fish factory" motherships..

That's all they need to do, put up a large sign. If someone is killed, it is very sad, but you cannot go hunting the shark. It's done nothing more than tasted what it thought was a food source.
Most sharks bite and then leave, knowing this is something that isn't palatable to them. There are some cases when a White has eaten the person, but those don't happen often. It's usually, bite and leave. The bite though, unfortunately sometimes hits a main artery.

That is no longer true.... due to over fishing Humans are now on the menu.
most surfers do not want to have the sharks killed. Again it was a Crazy group of RWingers that have Zero Tolerance attitudes and no respect for nature... As many of the Surfers say "None of the Fuckers even Surf"
and the Nets still kill sharks when they get tangled but even worse they can accidentally kill dolphins, seals and turtles.
