More than 2,000 believed trapped under landslide in Afghanistan

(Reuters) - More than 2,000 people are trapped after a landslide smashed into a village in a remote mountainous area of northeastern Afghanistan on Friday, a spokesman for the local governor said, prompting a massive search and rescue effort.
"There were more than 1,000 families living in that village. A total of 2,100 people - men, women and children - are trapped," Naweed Forotan, a spokesman for the Badakhshan governor, told Reuters.
A senior police official earlier said up to 500 people were missing, believed dead.

Three bodies have been pulled out of the rubble in Argo district and at least 100 people are being treated for injuries, Colonel Abdul Qadeer Sayad, a deputy police chief of Badakhshan province, said.

JUST like in places like the Philippines and Bangladesh...

IT shows how little regard they have for life in some of those countries, and how badly and poorly they see those poorer sectors of their communities, that they even allow their homes to be built at the base of unstable hillsides..

AND then there's the matter of why the dangerous conditions of the hillsides themselves are often made that much worse through bad, improper and plain stupid tree clearing, mining or farming practices ?

NO doubt many of those people will want to return and move back into the same area, too ? Just waiting for the next wet winter to start the same problems over again.. (The same as is also sometimes seen in some of the bushfire, flood and tornado regions of the world ~ even in "First world" places like the USA, Australia, Spain and France, from time to time ~ where locals will fight their governments for their "right" to rebuild in dangerous locales..).

HOW hard would it be for those countries to legislate against bloody minded employers, chiefs/administrators/councils, or uncaring landlords being able to allow housing even to be built in such unstable areas ? Evil or Very Mad
