Brunei is to become the first East Asian country to adopt Sharia law despite international criticism.
Sharia punishments will include severing of limbs for theft and death by stoning for adulterers and
will be introduced over a period of three years.
The death penalty, including by stoning, will be introduced in the final phase a year later for offences including adultery, sodomy and insulting the Koran or the Prophet Muhammad.
Most of the laws will also apply to non-Muslims.
That raises concern among Western workers in the oil sector and tens of thousands of ethnic Chinese Bruneians and 30,000 mostly Roman Catholic Filipino migrant workers.
About 20 per cent of residents are non-Muslim, including substantial Buddhist and Christian
communities.

I suppose if you don't like the new laws you can leave the country, so why do in the UK pander to those that are unhappy with our Christian life style.

Snap. But best not mention it, that's racist. I find it ridiculous on here that most jump on any perceived insult to any 'minority', yet the threat to and abuse of women's rights are totally ignored, not to mention the sheer barbarity of this return to the dark ages.

Unless a UKIP member, person, voter says women would be better off at home looking after the house and children like the good old days - they'd be screaming women's rights then, right?

A huge outcry from all over re Uganda and the gay movement, but as it is mainly going to involve the lesser sex it seems to be OK and not many are unduly worried....

It is a complete step backwards and completely condemn this action as I do the death penalty anyway anywhere in the world. To me you make people suffer crimes by living a long life in paying for their crime, death is too easy an option and is still as expensive with awaiting appeals.
Seems though this is more a measure out of fear that the nation is seeing its resources dwindle fast:
Critics say the new penal code will give authorities expanded powers to stifle dissent at a time when
palace officials are concerned about dwindling energy reserves.
'A common concern among the palace elite is that the gas is going to run out. The population's loyalty has been bought with gas money,' said Maung Zarni, a visiting fellow at the London School of Economics who quit the Darussalam Brunei University in 2013 over what he said was a lack of academic freedom.

As always, the answers aren't simple:
The percentage of Muslims who say they want sharia to be “the official law of the land” varies widely around the world, from fewer than one-in-ten in Azerbaijan (8%) to near unanimity in Afghanistan (99%). But solid majorities in most of the countries surveyed across the Middle East and North Africa, sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and Southeast Asia favor the establishment of sharia, including 71% of Muslims in Nigeria, 72% in Indonesia, 74% in Egypt and 89% in the Palestinian territories.
At the same time, the survey finds that even in many countries where there is strong backing for sharia, most Muslims favor religious freedom for people of other faiths. In Pakistan, for example, three-quarters of Muslims say that non-Muslims are very free to practice their religion, and fully 96% of those who share this assessment say it is “a good thing.” Yet 84% of Pakistani Muslims favor enshrining sharia as official law. These seemingly divergent views are possible partly because most supporters of sharia in Pakistan – as in many other countries – think Islamic law should apply only to Muslims. Moreover, Muslims around the globe have differing understandings of what sharia means in practice.
The survey – which involved more than 38,000 face-to-face interviews in 80-plus languages with Muslims across Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa – shows that Muslims tend to be most comfortable with using sharia in the domestic sphere, to settle family or property disputes. In most countries surveyed, there is considerably less support for severe punishments, such as cutting off the hands of thieves or executing people who convert from Islam to another faith. And even in the domestic sphere, Muslims differ widely on such questions as whether polygamy, divorce and family planning are morally acceptable and whether daughters should be able to receive the same inheritance as sons.

" In Nottingham, the Greenwood Primary School cancelled a Christmas nativity play because it interfered with the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha. In Scarborough, the Yorkshire Coast College removed the words Christmas and Easter from their calendar not to offend Muslims. In Scotland, the Tayside Police Department apologized for featuring a German shepherd puppy as part of a campaign to publicize its new non-emergency telephone number. The postcards are potentially offensive to the city's 3,000-strong Muslim community: Islamic legal tradition says that dogs are impure.

also it is a tiny nation with less than half a million people but has a very good Human rights and Development Index.
a tiny wedged of island between Malaysia with 30 million people and Indonesia with 230 million people
Brunei is ranked fifth in the world by gross domestic product per capita at purchasing power parity. The IMF estimated in 2011 that Brunei was one of two countries (the other being Libya) with a public debt at 0% of the national GDP
It is the only sovereign state completely on the island of Borneo; the remainder of the island's territory is divided between the nations of Malaysia and Indonesia.

People with no religious affiliation now make up the third-largest global group in a new study of the world's faiths - coming after Christians and Muslims but just before Hindus.
The study, based on extensive data for the year 2010, also showed Islam and Hinduism are the faiths most likely to expand in the future while Judaism has the weakest growth prospects.
It showed Christianity is the most evenly spread religion, present in all regions of the world, while Hinduism is the least global with 94 per cent of its population in one country, India.
Considering Atheist hardly existed 100 years ago, I don't think we are losing

I suppose if you don't like the new laws you can leave the country, so why do in the UK pander to those that are unhappy with our Christian life style.
What? And why should they have to? Should Alan Turing have just left the UK in the 1940s? Like every other backward country that criminalizes homosexuality and uses stoning to death as a punishment Brunei should be roundly condemned and pressure to put on to remove this disgraceful laws.
