What Is A Good Salary (let's say outside London)?
29th April 2014
I've just read that Tube workers are on strike again - not sure if drivers are included and I think I heard teachers may be going on strike soon over pay and conditions.
Now, I believe teachers, when qualified are on around £40 - £50,000 as a teacher and £50,000+ as a headteacher, and train and tube drivers are on £35 - £50,000 - and of course in jobs like that you can get plenty of overtime if you so wish (same with the police and NHS).
My wife earns £12,000 working full time in a bank - as a cashier and has never been on strike over pay and conditions.
What is a good salary for a full time job (35 - 40 hours)?

All depends.
Rwers will only call anything over £50k for themselves a decent wage, but are happy for everyone else a salary on minimum wage is perfectly acceptable. That is because tories are greedy , self, self, I'm all right, Jack individuals.

Hi Andy - I'm asking the posters on here what they think is a good salary, not to go on about left and right wing - that's boring.

Re: What Is A Good Salary (let's say outside London)?
Might be boring Andy, but it is relevent.
Depends on the skills and qualifications needed, experience, seniority in firm.
Under the coilition, the disparity between rich and poor, manual workers and management has hugely increased.
Unfortunately the tory mantra and philosophy of "if you don't like your job, get another" doesn't carry any water. Jobs are scarce, often hundreds applying for a single vacancy, and most new jobs are zero hours contract, worthless to a main breadwinner who pays the bills.
So, to answer you, I guess for a family man, married, 2 kids and a £500 per month mortgage, whose wife works part time on minimum wage, he would need to earn , £30,000, taking home £2k per month is barely a living wage.

The has between rich and poor grew more under labour than ever.....

But with regards to OP, teachers and tube drivers are well paid enough.
Tube drivers probably over paid.

Re: What Is A Good Salary (let's say outside London)?
Errrrm... won't the gap between rich and poor always get wider?
Inflation goes up in percentage points.
It would need huge government intervention to do something about that - sphinx has for a year or so advocated bringing down the top salaries moreso than raising working salaries which is a brilliant idea.
And no government will do it - right, left, top or bottom!

Re: What Is A Good Salary (let's say outside London)?
One thing I did want to point out on this thread is there are millions of jobs out there being done by married men and women which are much less than £20,000 - they get on with them, struggle with the bills, raise children and don't quit because "they'd be better off on benefits" (which they most certainly would)!

I actually agree with you Andy but you failed to mention that the situation was exactly the same under Labours years of hell.
Or are you not old enough to remember that period of time?
I seem to recall that we were not living in financial utopia during Labours reign.

Re: What Is A Good Salary (let's say outside London)?
It's such a tough thing to say, though, because it depends on where you are. I was working a job back in the late '90s for around $30,000 a year, a friend in New York City said I'd be making closer to $70,000 per year if I did the same job in NYC -- but I'd need it because everything's more expensive there.
I'd say that it's better to describe a "decent wage" is one where you have at least a quarter to a third of your yearly income left after you've covered your basic needs, so that you have some money to have fun with and some money to save.
By the way, I also think the idea of a "maximum wage" would be terrific, or something that required that the top salary at a company could be no more than 50 times the lowest full-time salary, etc.

No, Periodically you have revolution or Revolts or the formation of strong Union Movements that close the gap a Bit. but they never last forever and once gone the gap starts getting wider again.

That is your opinion, but you can gauge a view from a poster posting over a long time.
The point you miss though (where I will once again embarrass you) is he is being judged on view points he has made posting, thus my views countering this are based upon the exact same thing, his posts.
So why have you not spoken in regards to those claiming he is racist by the same logic then Andy?

I've said for quite a while now, as you know, when i am accused. I thought what a refreshing change it would be for me to point out that it goes both ways - nobody knows what another person thinks - the government don't know, the police don't know, and neither does anybody on here.
You know i've said that for 4 years, and you know i'm right.

All irrelevant, you did not point this out to those accusing did you Andy, hence your fuck up here, because this is what you said:
"With the greatest respect, didge has not proven you are not racist nicko."
Now if you were being fair and logical you would have stated this:
"With the greatest respect, didge has not proven you are not racist nicko, but then Handy Andy can not prove you are racist either".
Thus you exposed yourself here to a very hypocritical view point by omitting this part did you not?

Re: What Is A Good Salary (let's say outside London)?
If needed, I can copy and paste some of Nickos more 'intolerant' posts from flop.
I won't bother, because it is irrelevant to the debate. Big Andy posed a good question, to which I replied, and the reasonable and polite debate started.
Nicko jumped in , as he usually does on flop, to insult the poster, not debate or reply to the post.
I will return insults with interest.
Ask Scrat, who is invariably his target.
I sympathise with BA's wife for her low wage, HtmbE isis a similar situation, on low wages at a school.
Capping public sector wages to say £100,000 pa would be a start. in my experience that is enough for anyone to live happily on. If they think they are worth more, then they are free to join the private sector to live their dream.
At the same, the minimum wage should be abandoned, and replaced with the living wage.

Talking of certain other channels..
American ones are very good and they know how to pack the meat in.
I do partake of uk ones when I am home and make them pile the jalapeno's high, it really does not matter what meat is in there as they are full of jalapenos and chipotle sauce, I rarely choose the bacon option because the bacon is crap
