A video showing a mother from Trinidad and Tobago whipping her 12-year-old daughter with a belt for sharing sexually explicit photos of herself on Facebook has gone viral, sparking a national conversation in the island nation about corporal punishment.

Last Sunday, a video was posted on Facebook showing Helen Bartlett, a mother of four from Point Fortin, beating her sobbing daughter while hurling profanities at her.

The six-minute clip, which depicts Ms Bartlett raining blows on the 12-year-old girl, who whimpers in pain and cowers from the belt, has been shared more than 43,000 online.

Hi Andy, what do you think about the Mum's behaviour? I honestly don't believe that her actions are a reasonable punishment, it's physical and emotional abuse of a child

Unbelievable, isn't it? I remember a few years back, an American father punished his daughter for her Facebook behavior by doing this:

... and so many people thought this guy was just awesome! I couldn't believe it, I think he's a psycho.

The girl is old enough to understand why it happened, there won't be any long lasting effects - physical or emotional.

sort of agree with Andy, she essentially making child porn she is 12 and sending naked pics pale

Now I don't 100% agree but at the same time, in the west we would possibly put them on sex offender register for life affraid

So not sure, she really just should not of had a facebook account at 12, which I know is hard Rolling Eyes

and there are enough adult women that do the same thing silent

so who knows, long term she may be better off Neutral

Physically maybe but emotionally? Do you really believe that Andy? Yes what she did was unacceptable but ask yourself how she was able to do such a thing and where her parents were? What kind of upbringing has she had? Is uncontrolled violence and anger the right way to discipline a child? Evil or Very Mad
