Canadian school won't admit student whose mother refuses to vaccinate him
A 10-year-old Manitoba boy is being kept home from school because his mother refuses to vaccinate him against measles.
Aidan Walsh is a Grade 5 student at Shevchenko School in Vita, Man., where parents were told a student may have a case of measles.
Grade 5 Manitoba student Aidan Walsh has to stay home from classes because he is not vaccinated for measles and there is a possible case at his school. (CBC)
But Aidan’s mom Kim never had him vaccinated against measles because she believes he is safe with homeopathic remedies.
The province disagrees — and is enforcing a policy that says any child who hasn’t been vaccinated and could be at risk, has to stay home.
“To me it almost seems like a bullying situation, you know? ‘Get the needle! Get the needle! If you don't get the needle, you can't go!’" said Kim.
British Columbia is currently dealing with an outbreak of measles, while Manitoba and other provinces have had a handful of cases.
So far in Manitoba, there have been four reported cases of measles, and after the first two, the province’s public health officials sent a letter to parents of school-age children.

Good for the school, why should other children be put at risk just because of one family that chooses to believe in nonsense?

freedom of choice bites the dust again, i hope she decides to get a tutor or educate the child herself..
why should she be forced to do something she disagrees with...

But why should the entire student population be put in jeopardy of contracting measles just because one kid's mother doesn't believe in vaccines? It can be a fatal disease.
Re: Canadian school won't admit student whose mother refuses to vaccinate him
There is a wee lad who used to attend the same primary schools as my kids, his mother refused to let him have the 3in one jab incase it done him more harm than good, but there was no issue with the school.

Probably because there was no measles outbreak going on there, though.
Of course, if this school didn't want to offer the kid a non-pork lunch alternative, this story would not be about his freedom, but about whether minorities can call the shots over the majority ...

This is a potential health issue.

Well, I s'pose you could take that position with any law, GIG. Why should I be forced to abstain from robbing a bank? Why should I be forced to abstain from killing someone when I am angry at him or her? Why am I forced to keep off private property? Indeed, why am I forced to keep off the grass?
It's just freedom of choice, biting the dust again. Ain't it a bitch?

Re: Canadian school won't admit student whose mother refuses to vaccinate him
Is it law that you have to take any vaccination?
If only this child is not vaccinated then surely the risk is only to them as others already protected against it? So where is the risk to them?
I think the bigger problem is allowing immigration from high risk countries unscreened.

Don't know about the lovely land of Canadia, but in the U.S. there are a lot of school districts that won't admit your kids until they're vaccinated for measles, etc.

to the child who has not been vaccinated, the mother has the choice and she must feel the best for her child is not to vaccinate..
are you against freedom of choice??

So just to get you on the record, do you think freedom of choice should apply, as Quill pointed out above, even to things that put society in danger?

if everyone else is vaccinated what danger is there....
freedom of choice is just that or it is taken away....

Well they won't get it if they've all been vaccinated except him, will they?

Sure, as long as the only people they ever come into contact with are vaccinated. So they can't go grocery shopping or anywhere but school and home.

Why aren't you criticising the other people who aren't vaccinated then?
Anyway, I think they're making him stay off school so he doesn't get measles himself.

What you talkin about?
The problem is allowing the contagious in unchecked more than the few unvaccinated in a relatively low occurrence area with most vaccinated

I'll criticize anybody who doesn't get vaccinated, that's just a stupid thing to do.

DOWN here in Paradise, they still generally allow those unvaccinated kids to attend school...
However :
* They might miss out on many excursions, sports and extra-curricular activities; and
* When there is an outbreak of those communicable diseases, those un-vaccinated kids can be ordered to stay home..
IT SHOULD also be noted that the number of kids belonging to those idiotic self-taught-from-the-internet mums down here are less than 4% of all schoolkids.
Actually the 'no jab, no play' policy was implemented this year.
http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/nsw/no-jab-no-play-policy-is-now-a-reality-across-nsw/story-fni0cx12-1226793383449
THE state's new laws aimed at raising immunisation rates have now come into effect in childcare centres across NSW.
As of January 1, a child cannot be enrolled at a childcare facility unless the parent or guardian provides an official record proving the child is fully immunised or an approved exemption is provided.
Health Minister Jillian Skinner said the law sent a clear message to parents that the health of children and the wider community needed to be protected: "The government is determined to protect our children from the devastating consequences of vaccine-preventable disease."

unless they had other medical complications making vaccination unsuitable for them.
It is still better to not expose them to it as vaccination is not 100%, unvaccinated children allow the viruses a chance to mutate and become more virulent.
why take the risk? would you like to raise the speed limit around schools? same thing we do lots to reduce risk to children
