By Beatrice Le Bohec — WE’RE dying here! In Beziers and Perpignan the phrase has become something of a refrain of late, a shorthand way of explaining why the two southern towns are on the verge of falling into the hands of the resurgent far-right party, the National Front (FN). And they are not alone. Polls suggest between 10 and 15 mid-sized French towns could have FN mayors by the time ballot boxes close today in the second round of nationwide local elections. The party of Marine Le Pen has already secured one mayor’s seat, its candidate having won an outright majority in the depressed former coal mining town of Henin-Beaumont at the first attempt last Sunday. That marked the first time the FN has secured control of a town in France’s industrial north, previously a bastion of the left, including the once mighty Communist Party.

“I am an old Socialist and will be all my life,” said Pascal, a shopkeeper in the town’s historic centre. “But I am not going to vote for the PS because we are in a grave situation here... The only things opening are kebab stands. Beziers is a beautiful town, a historic place that was one of the crossroads of Europe, but the town centre is on its deathbed.”...

31 March

Fights started outside French town halls tonight as they came under the control of the far-right National Front for the first time following dramatic gains in local elections.

Exit polls suggested that the anti-immigration and anti-Europe party had roundly beaten the governing Socialists in a number of key constituencies. Frejus and nearby Beziers are now expected to have National Front (FN) mayors sworn in, along with around five other towns, following a nationwide drubbing for President Francois Hollande's Socialists.

Riot police were also out in force in other parts of the country as anti-fascist demonstrators threatened FN candidates with violence.

The Lefties call themselves democratic, yet when the Right win in a fair election they riot!

France elections: President Hollande to fire PM after local election rout with far right on the move

President François Hollande, reeling from calamitous results in local elections, is expected to fire his Prime Minister this week and to promise a "new start" to his stumbling presidency.

The change of government may come as soon as Monday as Mr Hollande seeks to show that he has heard the message of an angry electorate. The energetic, ambitious interior minister, Manuel Valls, 52, is favourite to succeed Jean-Marc Ayrault as Prime Minister.

Rumours were swirling in Paris today, however, that Mr Holande may turn instead to the outgoing Paris mayor, Bertrand Delanoe, 63. This would give France its first openly gay Prime Minister

Please please has Hollande any nonce left.................. The anti gay marriage movement in France is one of the  most vociferous in Europe.  Imagine having a gay PM.

I have no problem BTW but me thinks the average Frenchie might.....

I've been posting this for years:

Don't blame the likes of Hitler and Nick Griffin - blame those who paved the way for them.

Not unsettling but something we have been mooching about for years.  Since the open door policies of the last century, Europe has been witnessing the dumbing down lests all be equal but on the lower standards so as not to upset the less fortunate.

The clock has been ticking and some in the EU  towers have finally realised.  Hope it is not too late to bring back our Country just as France, Germany Austria and Greece to name a few wish to do.

That is not against immigration just control over who enters..........

Free lunches might even stop never mind the gravy train.

02 April 2014

The unelected ex-girlfriend of French president François Hollande was today made a senior minister in his government.
Ségolène Royal’s appointment as Ecology and Energy Minster as part of a panicked reshuffle caused widespread astonishment and anger.

France’s entire Socialist government resigned following meltdown in local elections on Sunday, when the far-right National Front made dramatic gains across the country.

Socialist mismanagement was blamed for more than 150 town halls swinging to opposition parties in the weekend’s local elections.
