Minority communities and migrants in the UK give more to charity

Among fears of an influx of immigrants after the recent lifting of EU work restrictions, it is important to appreciate the positive contribution from UK's migrant and minority communities. Charitable causes in the UK benefit from strong traditions of giving among such groups, which result in generosity to UK charities and support for needs in countries of origin, according to research led by Cathy Pharoah and Tom McKenzie at the Centre for Charitable Giving and Philanthropy. At £2.4 billion, money 'remitted' overseas is recognised by the UK government as vital to overseas development, and compares with total donations of around £1 billion to international charities.

Data from the Office for National Statistics shows that migrant and minority households are just as likely to support UK charities as other similar UK households, and that those sending money overseas are more likely to donate to UK charities. Forty-two per cent of remitting households give to charity, against 29 per cent of the general population.

Migrant and minority giving shows commitment and self-sacrifice. One quarter of remitters live in London with its high cost of living and over one-tenth are at risk of poverty. Black and black British donors give 2.5 per cent of their income to charity, while white donors give 1.6 per cent.

Patterns of generosity include, for example, making regular monthly donations of £10 to the NSPCC alongside remittances of £25, or remitting £200 as often as possible while giving £10-£20 to charities.

"Despite the heavy demand on their resources which arises from the costs of establishing and maintaining a living for themselves and their families in the UK, while simultaneously remitting money back to their country of origin, many migrants also give to charities and needy individuals in the UK. This is particularly remarkable because the personal situation of thousands of migrants who give through sending back to countries of origin is often very much harsher than that of UK charitable donors," the researchers point out.

"Valuing the true extent and nature of philanthropy in the UK means that different traditions of giving have to be acknowledged and embraced. In particular, this means acknowledging that giving and sharing within extended family and community networks is an important part of giving cultures," the report concludes.
