Pint-sized recovery: Chancellor in pub

Voters will tomorrow deliver a damning verdict on George Osborne’s arrogant boast that he is turning the economy around.

Instead they believe their lives have been made worse by the savage cuts introduced by the Chancellor, who delivers his Budget on Wednesday.

Just 9% of those quizzed in our Sunday Mirror/ComRes poll said their ability to pay monthly bills had improved in recent years.

And 44% said their finances had worsened, despite Tory Osborne’s claim of “a responsible recovery for all”.

The Fuel Poverty Action group blasted him for cutting cash for insulation, making heating bills more costly.

Only 7% of people polled said key public services like schools and hospitals were better, with 54% saying they were worse.

Just 14% believed people could get a job regardless of background now compared with 44% who said social mobility in the jobs market had worsened under multi-millionaire Mr Osborne.

More people said the economy has worsened in recent years (36%) compared with those who believed it had improved (34%).

Voters are particularly gloomy about the outlook for unemployed young people. Our poll found 51% reckon prospects have got worse for the 900,000 young jobless – just 16% think they are better.

And 40% reckoned it was harder for first-time buyers to find a home than a few years ago - compared with 30% who said things had improved.

ComRes head of political polling Tom Mludzinski said Mr Osborne should use his Budget to “get the positive messages across to a public that appears not to be hearing them”.

The Chancellor is expected to give a £100 tax cut to all workers by raising the personal allowance.

Tory MPs also want him to use the £1bn squeezed from public services to cut the number of people hit by the 40p rate of tax which kicks in at £41,450. Bingo tax could be cut and England is likely to a new “garden city”.

Gail Cartmail of Unite public services union said: “The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer.”
