Empire actor Jussie Smollett is convicted of orchestrating 2019 fake racist and homophobic attack with help of two Nigerian brothers to boost his career:

Jussie Smollett was tried on six counts of disorderly conduct on accusations he lied to police in January 2019

He was convicted of five of the six counts, and could now spend up to 20 years behind bars  

Dan Webb, the special prosecutor, said after the verdict that Smollett had created a 'ridiculous story', adding: 'For Mr Smollett to get up and lie for hours and hours, that really compounded his misconduct'

He reminded journalists that the police probe into the fake attack involved 26 cops, who spent 3,000 hours and $100,000 trying to help Smollett  

Smollett's attorney, Nenye Uche, said his client was '100 per cent innocent' and they were confident the verdict would be overturned on appeal

The jury began deliberating on Wednesday - they are five white men, five white women, a black man and a Hispanic woman

They were tasked with deciding if Smollett lied when he told three different officers that he'd been beaten and was the victim of a hate crime

Smollett had maintained his innocence throughout, insisting he did not stage the attack as the Osundairo brothers claim
The 39-year-old still says he was the victim of a beating and that he had nothing to do with orchestrating it

The brothers claimed he'd set it up so they would rough him up but not hurt him severely

I can't help but feel sorry for this daft twat if i'm honest.

He had everything going for him in that he was very well liked, had a great well paid job that he loved etc. Did we get to find out why he did this?

I can't see him as a wrong 'un. (There's certainly been far worse)

but he should have owned up when the police were on his trail.

he could have just taken it on the chin, he could have easily gotten round it too by saying the whole thing was a manifestation of inner turmoil, mental health struggles and stress and that he's really sorry etc etc.

He would've ended up with a shit load of sympathy which would probably have developed into admiration and furthermore no charges

No way! Lying to the police and the public are really serious offenses, but he didn't actually harm anyone. If what he pretended happened had actually happened, it would have been far worse than lying.

My point is that what Smollett did can't, as Tommy said, distort democracy by making people falsely believe that some Trump supporters have done racial attacks, because people already know that some of them really have.
