First topic message reminder :

Like countless others, I can simultaneously state that I have considerable experience of the NHS at its very best — and its worst.

I have been a supporter of the NHS all my life, with more knowledge of it than most people, particularly since giving birth in 1980 to a daughter with chronic health problems.

I have had cause to be grateful — and I am. But let it never be said that we have to take the knee in reverence to a system with many, many flaws.

Over the years, I have met good doctors and thoroughly dislikeable, arrogant ones; warm caring nurses and ones who'd be better suited to life as a concentration camp guard.

It is for that reason that I reject the cultish, sentimental semi-religion commonly known (with an accompaniment of clapping) as 'Our NHS,' which can make it feel like treason to complain.

Yet, after the fear and grief of the pandemic, this country has never been more conscious of our healthcare system.

We have perhaps never before realised how much we have taken for granted — like being able to make an appointment with a familiar family doctor.

I am hearing lots of people complaining about surgeries and how they are throbbing people off on the phone. Where the hospitals and NHS staff there have been amazing it seems local GP's have been very poor in regards to seeing patients

They are pretty inefficient.

Maybe we should rely on mercenaries.

I disagree.  I've worked closely with the USAF and the US Navy, and found them to be innovative and very efficient.  Compared to NASA, which was quite efficient only at blowing up space shuttles, the military departments are gems of efficiency.

Did you know that most of the US employment standards and rules are designed by the military?  Most employee manuals are derived from the military model.  Many of the rules of Justice and Uniform Codes are based on the military experience--the Miranda rules, for example.  The military is first when it comes to purchasing standards and contract enforcement.  In fact, the military probably even wrote the standard contract form.  Most OSHA standards are derived from military experience and resulting procedures.  The US military is out in front of the rest of the country when it comes to productivity and efficiency.

It's funny that you mention mercenaries.  I point this out whenever someone criticizes socialism.  The US military is one of the largest socialist organizations in the world.  We would all have to hire individual mercenaries to protect us, individually, were it not that we socialize these protections.  The same goes for police, fire and ambulance protection, and transportation and commerce (highways, ship ports and airports, etc.) facilities.  The list is infinite.
