Brilliant ideas thread.
I have had a Eureka moment.
So Cineworld is closing all it's cinemas in the UK, meaning that 5,500 people will be out of jobs, and it could be the end of cinemas for some considerable time, and who knows if any will survive given the economic climate we are living in now.
So.......why not open more drive throughs? Open air cinemas, like in the states, where people can sit in their cars and watch the film in social distancing safety.
The huge supermarkets like Asda and B&Q could rent their space out in the evenings...so they trade in the day and use the vast carparks at night for entertainment.
Win win for everyone.

Re: Brilliant ideas thread.
Almost all of them closed here, and then we saw a resurgence about 10 years ago.
They were a staple of my youth and we had a blast there as teenagers.
I dont think they are very profitable as they would close for the winter here.
It would be worse there because winter lasts 11 months there.

US drive in cinemas always looked so good when we saw them in films, especially if there was food and drink service and the girls sped round in roller skates....very
People here are used to the cold, they could wrap up warm and take a flask......I think lot's of people who miss going to the cinema would go.
Films like the latest James Bond have postponed their release date because all the cinemas are shut, now it seems some will go under before they can reopen. Cineworld is the giant amongst them, if they are all closing, albeit they haven't said for good as yet, what hope for the smaller venues?

'Drive-in' means two things in the US: drive-in restaurants and drive-in theaters. The waitresses in skates were only at drive-in restaurants...specifically, at Mel's Drive-in, which was a chain.
At Drive-in theaters, you had to walk up to the snack shop to buy treats and popcorn, etc.

Lol....I think jobs like that would be considered a bit too sexist nowadays.
When I was 17 almost 18, I was bored with office jobs, so I started working in some of Manchester's really great nightclubs.
I first worked at a rather plush club called Tiffany's, and because I was a bit of a rebel I was demoted to cigarette girl for a while.
It must have been the worst job in the club. Walking round the club with a tray of cigars and cigarettes slung round your neck was nothing compared to the ridiculous outfit I had to wear which was a low cut red satin frilly micro dress and black fishnet tights.
Being young I didn't care though....I had a good laugh there and met some nice (and not so nice) famous people.

Re: Brilliant ideas thread.
The original Mel's was in Berkeley, where I grew up. It was located on the corner of Haste St., and Shattuck Ave, the main street of downtown Berkeley. Hence the term "crusin' the main".
On Friday night you would take your 1949 Merc, and a friend, and cruise the main looking for 'chicks'. When you found some, you would cruse down to Mel's and 'drive-in' to get vanilla or cherry cokes and maybe a burger and fries.
The cars were front-to-back in lanes, so that if the first car wanted to get out, all the cars in back of him had to reverse out and let him go. On a busy Friday night it was a mess.

More like American Graffiti. Only that was filmed in Modesto, CA, just south of the Bay Area by about 85-miles. Grease was more about Southern California and the beach/high-school scene.
Lived in LA once, so I know the beach scene.

I think it's a brilliant idea, and I imagine modern technology could improve vastly on the washed-out screens and tinny speakers of yesteryear. I'd love to get out and see a movie, it's been ages.
And there's no reason people couldn't zoom around on skates selling concessions, even if it's not historically accurate

Re: Brilliant ideas thread.
I don’t see the point of drive-through cinemas at all! Why would I sit in my car watching a film through my windscreen?

Okay, well, why don't we move onto a brilliant idea of my own?
Snails routinely live 5-plus years, and it's perfectly safe to paint their shells with non-toxic paint. Why not market them as pets?

So a few ideas for painted snail shells: tartan, racing stripes (haha), sports team logos, leopard skin, turtle shell, soccer ball.

I would too. Have eds in back, at some artist's desk, painting snails and wearing some kind of hippy dress. Windows for kids and mom's to watch her work. Maybe playing a little guitar for breaks.
Ben...You can take care of the snails, and of course, sales. Great idea!
TEXAS PAINTED SNAILS. Make up a brochure, where you claim that Native Americans in Texas used to paint snails to please the gods...and house them in adobe huts.
You could even have a spin-off of Adobe Snail Huts...a little mud and a kiln.

Re: Brilliant ideas thread.
You'll build up traffic in the mall so much, that they will rent you the kiosk for free.
People will flock to see eddie-Oakley, the Bearded Snail Painter, and Bull-Ridin' Ben, the Texas Snail Wrangler.
Be thinkin' about painted turtles, too.

That's right. That's why I suggested the snail/slug puebos for the little guys.
I'm only a socialist as an economic answer (socialists are not political except Marxists, and I'm hardly one of those). Socialism is only an answer to meet the need for pooling money to purchase tooling. Many socialists care no more about the homeless than a capitalist.
