RBG passes.
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the demure firebrand who in her 80s became a legal, cultural and feminist icon, died Friday. The Supreme Court announced her death, saying the cause was complications from metastatic cancer of the pancreas.
The court, in a statement, said Ginsburg died at her home in Washington surrounded by family. She was 87.
"Our nation has lost a justice of historic stature," Chief Justice John Roberts said. "We at the Supreme Court have lost a cherished colleague. Today we mourn but with confidence that future generations will remember Ruth Bader Ginsburg as we knew her, a tired and resolute champion of justice."
Architect of the legal fight for women's rights in the 1970s, Ginsburg subsequently served 27 years on the nation's highest court, becoming its most prominent member. Her death will inevitably set in motion what promises to be a nasty and tumultuous political battle over who will succeed her, and it thrusts the Supreme Court vacancy into the spotlight of the presidential campaign.

I agreed with her on very little, yet I respected the hell out of her as a human being. Buckle your seatbelt folks it's about to be a bumpy ride here in the US.

Amazing how 'no judges should be appointed in the run up to an election' has gone out the window with McJowells.
He really is the most odious, conniving, slimy politician out there.
Wonder how many Rep Senators would vote on it knowing they could be further risking their seats in November?

I'm really fucking angry that she died. The evil joke that is Donald Trump should never have had the chance to influence the makeup of the United States Supreme Court as much as he has.
Re: RBG passes.
The answer is quite simple: when Democrats have the White House and the Congress, change the constitution of the Court. Expand the number of justices from 9 to 17, or whatever figure gives you the majority, and appoint all Democrats.
There is nothing sacrosanct about the size of the Supreme Court. Its make-up is not specified in the Constitution. The Constitution leaves open to legislation how many justices may sit.
As you say Ben, you can get worked-up over the hypocrisy. Don't get stressed...just fix it.
Meanwhile, it's not at all certain that the Senate will confirm a Trump appointee if Biden wins. The partisan division is so close, and all it would take is a couple or three Republicans to switch sides. We've got Romney who voted for impeachment conviction, and maybe Collins of Maine, or Lisa Murkowski of Alaska...plus Colorado Senator Cory Gardner, who is very worried about re-election. We might not have to worry at all.

He's trying to remain flexible.
It's pretty shitty, but the Dems did employ the nuclear option in 2013. Its because of that, that
nominees only need 51 not 60 votes for confirmation. It was called the nuclear option for a reason.
Its pretty shitty what the Republicans are doing. I dont doubt for a second that the Democrats wouldn't do the same thing. Politics in the US no longer revolve around working for the people and defending their rights. Its about taking the other party to the ground and stomping on them. We are relegated to spectators and cheerleaders to this sport or entertainment.

It was "nuclear" only in changing procedure. There is no equivalency to being anti-constitutional. The Constitution says the President selects, the Senate confirms. To withhold confirmation as a means of hostile take-over of another branch's prerogative, is an assault on the Constitution.

Democrats are learning not to be snowflakes. They will now play hardball, just as Republicans. I wouldn't be surprised if Republicans are outlawed for sedition. Presently, the are now the Russo-Republicans. We need a return of the Progressive Party.

Another possibility, Ben, arises if the Democrats take both houses and the White House. That is, to impeach whomever Trump appoints (frankly, along with any or all Republican-appointed Judges, if you are aggressive) and appoint liberal judges in their places. Then diligently and expeditiously bring forward all controversial issues, including healthcare, abortion, Russian tampering, racial justice, anything to do with the pandemic, and climate change, and decide them in a LW manner.
Of course, Republicans would bring things back if they got the same chance. But we would at least have 8-years of good law, and who knows...maybe Republicans will not have the opportunity in this century. Odds are, they are the party of pre-world war babies, and that's a dying breed if only by age.
It could be a brilliant leap forward.

Yeah, an entire party will be banned.
Were the Democrats banned for supporting slavery?
Jesus, you spew some fucking nonsense.

I hear fear in your voice. It depends on what the Democrats find out that Trump was doing, when they get the controls. Trump will tip his hand by pardoning his whole family, and his cabinet, and then resign, asking Pence to pardon him. Not to worry...the state governments will take over. You just know that New York has a list. Next in line will be California, Oregon, Washington...perhaps others.
If the investigation extends to the NRA, and their ties to Moscow money, plenty of Rep's and Senators will go down. It could be the death knell for the Republican Party.
These are the times of the new normal.

“Justice Ginsburg's life was one of the many versions of the American dream,” Chief Justice John Roberts says. “Ruth used to ask, 'What is the difference between a bookkeeper in Brooklyn and a Supreme Court justice?' Her answer: 'One generation'”
