Young and middle-aged people, barely sick with covid-19, are dying from strokes
Doctors sound alarm about patients in their 30s and 40s left debilitated or dead. Some didn’t even know they were infected.
Thomas Oxley wasn’t even on call the day he received the page to come to Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital in Manhattan. There weren’t enough doctors to treat all the emergency stroke patients, and he was needed in the operating room.
The patient’s chart appeared unremarkable at first glance. He took no medications and had no history of chronic conditions. He had been feeling fine, hanging out at home during the lockdown like the rest of the country, when suddenly, he had trouble talking and moving the right side of his body. Imaging showed a large blockage on the left side of his head.
Oxley gasped when he got to the patient’s age and covid-19 status: 44, positive.
The man was among several recent stroke patients in their 30s to 40s who were all infected with the coronavirus. The median age for that type of severe stroke is 74.
As Oxley, an interventional neurologist, began the procedure to remove the clot, he observed something he had never seen before. On the monitors, the brain typically shows up as a tangle of black squiggles — “like a can of spaghetti,” he said — that provide a map of blood vessels. A clot shows up as a blank spot. As he used a needlelike device to pull out the clot, he saw new clots forming in real-time around it.
“This is crazy,” he remembers telling his boss.

Strange and unpredictable virus, no doubt. I'll be glad when we are rid of it. I'm afraid that's going to be quite awhile though.

I don’t see how they can find a vaccination for this when the virus isn’t wholly understood yet.

For what purpose? Money?

Essentially, yes. I won't go into it in detail, because I think you understand. A dichotomy has developed, which is just the present manifestation of the timeless dichotomy between humanism vs. selfishness: people vs. profit.
The LW humanism instinctively jumps to the defense of people, oblivious to any other game. But the RW, aware of their own formula--take, accumulate and monopolize--instinctively recognizes the threat to their system. That system is based upon the exploitation of others. If a pandemic prevents those 'others' from offering up their bodies and services for exploitation, then the whole money-making scheme collapses.
That's why Trump was so horrified in late February, when he saw the stock market collapse. He was doubly horrified, because he had no one to target and/or start a fight with. It was a disease, and a subsequent crash, and everybody goes down. Ordinarily, with the RW, it's you lose, I win! They don't know how to respond without any downtrodden, or adversaries.
So, they try to make the remedy into same old we/they game. Never mind the pandemic...you guys go get the economy restarted, while me and my family hunker down on our big house on the hill. We take; you give.
They develop fancy names ("herd immunity", "paychecks" and "mortgages"), but it's simply rearranging society so that the poor and downtrodden pay the price, while the wealthy and privileged wait it out. We take/you give, becomes you sacrifice/we avoid!

I understand all of your points. They make sense to me.
Do you think money is being made out of the vaccine, though?

We have to wait until the air clears, for that one. The rush to find scapegoats is rampant right now.
Right now, the first priority is to get the vaccine. Then, if someone starts exploiting the process, Congress will have to act. (Trump cannot be depended upon; he would be delighted if someone were to go about gouging the public.)

Well, if the vaccine doesn’t work we can always add a little bleach to our diets.

Yeah. Trump, on a deregulation fling, might invent a Lysol enema and do an end-run (sozzy) on the FDA.
