‘Marry-your-rapist’ bill to be introduced by lawmakers in Turkey

A law which would allow men accused of having sex with girls who are under 18 to avoid punishment if they marry their victims is set to be introduced to parliament in Turkey.

The controversial so-called “marry-your-rapist” bill, which lawmakers are planning to introduce to Turkish parliament at the end of January, has sparked fury among women’s rights campaigners in the country.

Critics argue the legislation, which the opposition Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) is urging the government to axe, not only legitimises child marriage and statutory rape but also paves the way for child abuse and sexual exploitation.

A similar bill was defeated in Turkey in 2016 after national and global outrage. The legislation would have only pardoned men if they had sex without “force or threat”.

United Nations agencies warned the bill would generate a landscape of impunity for child abuse and leave victims vulnerable to experiencing additional mistreatment and distress from their assailants.

This sounds really strange - I have a feeling something got lost in translation?  Or maybe the meaning got deliberately twisted.  

The law-makers are probably saying that if a couple are engaged to be married, or intending to get engaged, the authorities will look more favourably on accusations of sexual activity between such couples.

IOW basically the authorities have decided to relax their strict rules about premarital sex, and saying it's allowed if the couple are in a long term relationship. That's what all this is about, imo.

I dislike Turkey. They like to portray the image of a secular country and they make a few 'progressive' concessions now and then, but the old fashioned traditionalists cling to their ancient ways.

Is it a bill going thru a sort of green paper stage or is it already law?
'Rapist' is understandably an emotive term but a distinction needs to be made between
a) sex with a minor (in this case less than 18yo) which is classed as statutory rape even if 'consensual',  ……... and
b) sex when a complete stranger jumps on a random woman, overpowers her and violates her.

Every week I bump into several Eastern Europeans, and while some of them aren't so great, most of them are warm, friendly, funny people who are fun to be around.

They seem to lack a little bit of civility.  Eastern Europeans are behind most of the sex trafficking all over the world.  Tells you a lot about their character.

As far as the Turks are concerned, I spent a lot of time there, almost lived there, and they are some mean people...all offense, very argumentative and cruel, and no empathy whatsoever.

That's the impressions I was left with.  If someone wants to try to change my mind, I'm open.  But they'll have to overcome a lot of bad experiences, to me, and vastly more to others that I observed.

But, I've been to Iran, and loved it.  Iranians are very close to Turks, in character, but you could befriend an Iranian.  You can talk, relax and interact with an Iranian.  Turks don't befriend anyone.  They are suspicious, unfriendly, and quick to anger.
