Over 15,000 People Were Fatally Shot in the U.S. Last Year, Says Report Empty Over 15,000 People Were Fatally Shot in the U.S. Last Year, Says Report

At least 15,292 people were fatally shot in the United States last year, according to a new report from a nonprofit that advocates against gun violence. The figure, released Thursday by the Gun Violence Archive group, represents a 3 percent increase in gun deaths from the previous year. The group also reported that the number of nonfatal firearm injuries grew to 29,613, which is a 5 percent increase over the previous year. The numbers, detailed in a report from The Trace, show that gun violence got worse in 2019 after a slight decrease between 2017 and 2018. The figures do not include suicides, which make up the majority of gun deaths. The report states that mass shootings, in which four or more people are shot, are also on the rise, with 5 percent of the injuries and deaths recorded last year occurring during mass shootings, compared to less than 4 percent in 2018. Shootings of children and teens also rose —the site reported 3,771 victims under the age of 18 killed or injured, compared to 3,539 in 2018.

And nothing.

It's just a less biased source, with a bit more information.

Does it make over 15,000 gun deaths acceptable?

MadFlog doesn't worry about whether being #1 in the Western world for gun-related deaths for citizens, in non-war zones and away from mass terrorist conflicts,  is acceptable or not...

Just as long as he can brag about being numero uno,  and as long as his beloved arms manufacturers keep on making their mega-profits..

"Live Free,  and Die, suckers !"  should be his mantra to live by.

*****************************************************

Just looking at the Pew' link that DopeyDawg put up (which broadly supports the O/P, by the by..) :

*  If a Canadian steps across the border, his/her risk of being shot is 5 times greater than if they stayed in their own country;

*  If an Aussie visits Ahmerika, they have 10 times the chance of being shot;

*  For a Spaniard, that jumps to 15 times..

But let's just remember it's not the guns doing the killing, it's the people.

And obviously if those evil/crazy people didn't have guns then they'd just use knives or chainsaws or whatever - and that would have no impact on the numbers killed whatsoever, of course.

So stay away from people's guns!

I think it's even more than this.  Guns--especially handguns--are mechanical devices, true, but they have one, and only one purpose.  Thus, we personify the gun, and work it into our personality as well as our hands.  The gun becomes one with us, if not the other way around.

The gun political movement in the US is akin to the American dream, and becomes a definition of ourselves.  The American dream is not about just what we will have, but it is also what we will become.  Our self-projection is that of the rugged individualist.  When angry, we no longer say I'll beat the pulp out of so and so...  Rather, we think of retrieving our gun and shooting him--the gun becoming an extension of our will.

The sharpshooting gun enthusiast is really a rare thing, although many more put up the pretense of being such.  If it were just about target sport, why are AR-15's so popular?  It's because they put one in the mindset of being the invincible soldier, or say, the rugged individualist.  Hence, if one believes s/he is that person, when a fight or flight situation comes along s/he opts to take lives.

And don't believe this crap about good guy/bad guy.  When someone uses a gun, a judgement is made as to good and bad only after-the-fact.  So no one can really predict that I'm being the good guy.  Oh, one may think one is the good guy, but when the cops puts the cuffs on him it is society's judgement that counts.  And let's face it, you did kill or maim someone...there's no question what you did.  Only the question of malice is open.
