Chinese student Wu Huayan dies after living on pennies a day
A severely malnourished student who survived on just 2 yuan ($0.30, £0.20) per day for years to support her brother has died, Chinese media say.
Wu Huayan's plight shocked China when pictures of the young woman, who weighed just over 20kg (43lb), emerged last year.
She was admitted to hospital with breathing problems in October 2019.
Donations flooded in to help her recovery, but her brother told reporters she had died on Monday.
Ms Wu had told the Chongqing Morning Post that she turned to the media for help after watching her father and grandmother die because they had no money to pay for treatment.
"I don't want to experience that - to wait for death because of poverty," she said.
Her brother, who has not been named, told Beijing Youth Daily that she was just 24 when she died.
Doctors said last year that the third-year university student was suffering from heart and kidney problems as a result of five years spent eating minimal amounts of food.

Death by poverty. It happens every day in the United States of America.

That is totally heartbreaking and sickening. It’s 2020. People shouldn’t be dying from poverty.

Re: Chinese student Wu Huayan dies after living on pennies a day
People dying from poverty is the driving force behind my political beliefs.
I've seen so many right-wing politicians in America comparing the poor to stray animals or greedy wild birds at a feeder.
I've seen a Republican presidential debate where the audience cried out that a young man on the verge of death who didn't have health insurance should be allowed to die.
I will probably always be a left-winger, until or unless the right gives up its animosity, or worse, blind indifference to the plight of poor people.

So someone dies in China, a state controlled left wing nation, and the first thought that pops into your head is to attack American Republicans?

The RW is propelled by selfishness. Here is that exchange you mentioned Ben:
RW'ers are the enemy of society. Not this or that society, but any society. Wealth and property strictly for themselves, is the only thing they care about.
Um...but that doesn't stop them from using our roads, airports, police, fire, and ambulance services, not to mention the dams, bridges and transportation services, etc.

Nutpicking is the fallacious tactic of picking out and showcasing the nuttiest member(s) of a group as the best representative(s) of that group — hence, "picking the nut". It's cherry picking a poor representative of the group – almost a straw man – to use as an ad hominem against the group.

I agree with you about "a nuttiest member". And, I share your sympathy with Wu Huayan's plight.
But if you go back over the Youtube clip, you will hear shouts in the background. It was not the speech that was important, but the crowd on this particular Sep 13, 2011 function. As ABC News described it, the crowd was the star of the show:
ABC News wrote:Tea Party Debate Audience Cheered Idea of Letting Uninsured Patients Die. ... are you saying that society should just let him die?” to which a small number of audience members shouted “Yeah".
Shades of what was to come...those are Trump supporters in the making, mostly southerners, conservatives, racist, gun-toting, women-hating, anti-semitic Neo-Nazis—that we were to meet once again at Charlottesville.
I don't think they were good examples of 'Christian Charity', nor are they people we would want to call friends or neighbors.

I think what LW is in China is very different from what it is in the West.
Does China have a well functioning welfare state that genuinely supports its population? Not really.
The poor aren't helped in China. As they wouldn't be by Reoublicans in America.
The only real difference is the GOP won't help the poor, while maintaining total freedom for mega corporations to treat people as they like.
While the CCP won't help the poor even as they maintain an iron grip on their economy.

Only because they have to in a democratic nation. If the GOP headed a one party state they'd be as icy on welfare as they are on health insurance.
The CCP don't have to deal with the needs and wishes of the people.

They have never proposed cutting much of anything. Look at how the act now with Trump. That's why we are 23 Trillion in debt. They may talk about it, but that's about it. Now libertarians are serious about getting the government to seriously cut spending. No chance of my team getting a chance until it all goes tits up though. Even then, something like the CCP has a better chance of gaining power.

Yes, but welfare for farmers (read as: the Con Agra corporations of American agriculture). Republicans are for special interests. Democrats are for the general interest.
