Police shoot, kill man who stabbed two to death in London Bridge terrorist attack

London Bridge has been sealed off after police responded to reports of gunshots in central London.

A BBC journalist said he was walking across the bridge when he saw what he thought was a fight between several men trying to restrain an man on the other side of the road.

He then said armed police responded and fired shots.

Scotland Yard said: "We are currently dealing with an incident at London Bridge.

A number of people are believed to have been injured in an incident at London Bridge, police have said.

The Met said they were called to a stabbing at a premises near the bridge just before 14:00.

The force said they had detained a man. London Ambulance Service has declared a "major incident".

The BBC's John McManus, at the scene, said he had seen a group of men in a fight on the bridge. Police then arrived and shots were fired, he said.

British Transport Police said London Bridge station was currently closed and no trains would be stopping there.

Police have advised people near the scene to follow directions from officers on the ground.

McManus told the BBC News channel: "Just a few minutes ago I was walking across London Bridge on the south bank to the north bank of the bridge.

"There appeared to be a fight going on on the other side of the bridge, with several men attacking one man.

"Police then quickly arrived, including armed police, and then a number of shots were fired at this man."

Noa Bodner, who is stuck in a restaurant on London Bridge. told BBC News channel: "There was a rush of people coming in and everybody basically dived under the tables.

"We were told to keep away from the windows, people that came from the outside were saying that shots were fired."

She said the manager ran to lock the doors and staff told people to move away from the front of the restaurant.

She said the mood was "calm", "some people seem a bit distressed, but they're being looked after by friends or staff".

Two members of the public have died after a stabbing attack at London Bridge, in which police also shot dead the suspect.

The Met Police has declared the attack a terrorist incident.

The suspect, who died at the scene, was believed to have been wearing a hoax explosive device, police said.

Videos on social media appear to show passers-by holding down a man. An officer arrives, seems to indicate to the group to move, and fires a shot.

A Whitehall source confirmed two members of the public died to the BBC but gave no further information.

Details are still emerging and Neil Basu, the head of UK counter-terrorism policing, said the force was keeping an open mind over the motive.

He said officers were called to a stabbing at a premises near the bridge just before 14:00.

I once had relatives living in London. I'm glad they moved out a few years ago. They did so in order to buy affordable property to live in, in nearby counties,  but the added bonus is that they're unlikely to get caught up in these random London attacks now.

The terrorist who attacked and murdered 2 innocents today was an evil degenerate and he got the suicide he so desperately craved.  

A hoax suicide vest = a desperate plea to be shot by the cops.

Yeah, but you didn't really answer the question. Are you saying that the loss of two innocent lives to violence is not a tragedy worth commenting upon?

Because if it's not, then a shooting in America in which someone who shouldn't have been able to get a gun kills two people isn't a problem, either. Should we only try to curb gun violence when the death toll hits 10, 20, 50?

Boris Johnson has condemned the early release of criminals after it emerged that the man who carried out the latest London Bridge terror attack was a convicted Islamist who had been freed from prison on an electronic tag.

Two people were murdered and at least three more seriously injured, when the suspected jihadist, wearing a fake suicide vest, went on a rampage at a criminal justice seminar he was attending.

Police named the man as Usman Khan, a 28-year-old from Staffordshire. Neil Basu, the Metropolitan Police's assistant commissioner, said his team were carrying out searches at the suspect's residence but believe that he was acting alone.

The Prime Minister paid tribute to the extraordinary bravery of members of the public and the emergency services who helped tackle the manic, describing them as “the very best of our country”.

But he also said he had "long argued" it was a "mistake to allow serious and violent criminals to come out of prison early”.

He added: “It is very important that we get out of that habit and that we enforce the appropriate sentences for dangerous criminals, especially for terrorists, that I think the public will want to see.

That's not an answer.

We tend to align pretty closely on politics, Quill. But to say 'meh' seemed pretty callous so soon after the deaths. But the more interesting fact here is how you think a knife murderer should be dealt with.

Its very unlikely they would set this off by shooting bullets at him

I see your point, and it justifies the police to a limited extent.  But, still, shooting a red hot bullet into a package of explosives can be risky.  Your average rounds from small arms will travel fast enough for friction heat, and I believe the hottest they will get is around while in flight is 300 C.

It's risky business..particularly when people are so tightly crowded around.

It was a belt, not a vest. The police had people back away when they arrived and shot him in the head.


Of course, Quill works out with Chuck Norris, so he would have used his martial arts skills on him and also removed the explosive belt and tossed it into the Thames.

It's a shame he wasn't there to bring that man in alive.
