Trump's plan to surprise the parents of a slain British teen was an embarrassingly tone-deaf, failed publicity stunt
You can almost imagine the reality-show excitement that surely went into the ill-considered plan to introduce Anne Sacoolas, the American diplomatic wife who killed 19-year-old motorcyclist Harry Dunn when she drove down the wrong side of an English lane in August, to Dunn’s grieving parents. Sacoolas left the U.K. in early September under diplomatic-immunity protections and has not been seen in public since.
The Dunn family, now in the United States to drum up support to send Sacoolas back to the U.K. to face justice, had accepted an “urgent” invitation by the White House from National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien, to visit Donald Trump in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday night.
President Trump said Wednesday that he had arranged the meeting at the request of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Speaking at a joint press conference with Italian President Sergio Mattarella, he described the encounter as “beautiful in a certain way,” adding that he expressed condolences “on behalf of our country. ”
He then admitted that he tried to get the family to meet Sacoolas, who was waiting in an adjacent room. “I offered to bring the person in question in,” he said. “And they weren’t ready for it.”
Trump, it seems, thought he could convince the Dunns to meet the woman who killed their son, and would do so by opening a side door through which she would walk. The whole scene would be captured by a pool of photographers who had been summoned for the meeting.
But the Dunns would have none of it and refused to meet her. Dunn family spokesman Radd Seiger said that the family felt “ambushed” when the “bombshell” was dropped that Sacoolas was next door.
They had envisioned meeting her one day, but as Seiger told The Daily Beast, “only on British soil” and “only with mediators, counselors, and their legal team in tow.”

Just more proof that the President of the United States is a narcissistic sociopath.

To think that it could be so easily fixed by the US...
Point out that the British police were mistaken when they let her go under the "misapprehension" that her crimes were protected by her hubbie's 'diplomatic immunity';
Deny her any continuing faux "diplomatic" protection;
Arrest her, and extradite her back to Britain;
And 'let justice take its course'..
True to form, though, the US gov't keeps on tripping over their own inbred arrogance, once again deluding themselves that they are above anyone or anything else -- and especially so wherever their rich chums/buddies/mates are concerned.

Those poor parents were put on the spot. Fancy springing a surprise like that on people when they were at their most vulnerable, and exhausted. With cameras rolling, too.
Sacoolis was seeking closure and the startled parents were like : "fuck off we don't want to hear your mealy mouth apologies, we want to see you in court".
Nice try, Sacoolis & Cheetoh.

This time it wasn't the US government. We, in America, have been suffering over the government by betrayal of Donald Trump for almost 3-years.
This time Trump was hoping he could create a warm, fuzzy moment, which would counter all the bad publicity going around about his handling of Ukraine and the Kurds. The ham-handed lout didn't even realize the insult he was delivering.
Why do you think the US threads are overflowing with complaints about Trump. I'm sure this one was based on a mistaken belief of an insensitive boor, so imagine what he's like with he affirmatively and intentionally gets going. You have one lost child; Mexico has thousands, six of which were killed right in his custody. And thousands of children have lost their parents and families, and are being kept in cages that even free-range chickens don't have to endure.
That's why we in America are talking Impeachment. It is my hope that Trump will be imprisoned after leaving office, but I don't count on it. As much as Tories/Republicans are known for their cruel insensitivity, the other side is known for dithering and much wringing of hands. So the moment is now, and ridding our corpus of this cancer is the most we can hope for.

If only the left could be as self-assured and as free of self-doubt as the right is in America. A little BDE is all it needs.

The parents have always said they don't want her sent to prison. But they want their day in court. Her driving robbed a boy of his life and she can't just shrug & walk away as if it was a non event.
