It's a political decision, not a rulebreaking one.
They were volunteers, using their own vehicle, wearing civilian clothes.
The fact the official car was on scene is a red herring.
They were correct that there is probably an intention to close that station, and this gives t management that leverage.

Either some jobsworth has his head up his arse or someone IS using this incident to make big changes behind the scenes.
These two men have helped people, with no monetary reward, for many years, saving countless lives and no doubt putting their own lives in danger if needed.
This incident held no risk, they were not on duty, they were acting like good citizens. There must be an underhand motive for sacking them.

I wonder how many lives the jobsworth manager has actually saved and how many rescues has he been involved in?
At a guess - none.

The man on the left has served them for 40 odd years, as did his father and his grandfather before them.
They should, as the lady MP said, get medals not the sack.

Didn't something like this happen elsewhere when some politically correct zealot in a nice, safe headquarters had lifeboatmen fired for the heinous crime of having a tea mug with, er, a sparsely dressed woman on it in their hut?
