Well that's cheaper than giving them another rise isn't it ?

I,m beginning to agree with you, but it's not just the Tories, it's Labour as well. None of them are to be trusted !

It's not a popular vote winner for the 3 or 4 million on minimum wage.
Not even a mention of increasing the threshold at which you start paying tax. Needs to rise pdq to £15000

But it's not just for MPs, is it?
The current entry level for higher rate income tax of 40 per cent is £50,000, which may sound a lot - and certainly is a lot to anyone on the standard basic wage or on benefits - but it hits people like senior teachers, nurses, police and military officers and middle managers...the very people this country desperately needs, and when National Insurance and ever-rising essential costs are added into the equation, losing almost half a hard-earned pay rise or the little interest yield from whatever savings one has, the current HR tax rate is a considerable disincentive.

Anyone who is earning £80,000/pa, a really large sum, will TAKE HOME a further £500 per month.
Meanwhile, many on minimum wage still have to claim credits and visit food banks.
In fairness, most of Boris's opponents have poured scorn on this policy.

Good article in the Independent.
Boris buying his way into power, using taxpayers money.
We’re used to tax cuts being used as bribes to win voters. We’re used to Tory tax cuts being aimed at the well-off. What is truly audacious about Boris Johnson’s proposed tax cut is that it is aimed with such laser precision at the most important and valuable sector of British society today – 160,000 or so Conservative Party members, older, richer and benefiting from investment income, and the biggest winners in Boris’s great fiscal reform. Under Johnson they’ll have never had it so good. I doubt many could resist the temptation to vote Boris to be thousands of pounds a year richer. Could you?

wouldn't those on min wage pay little in tax already as the tories have been moving millions out of tax. Of course labours plans to slash the tax free allowance and increase the min wage would make more people pay tax.Andy wrote:It's not a popular vote winner for the 3 or 4 million on minimum wage.

Personally I think the £9billion would be better spent, if it should be spent at all on raising the tax allowance some more. But now may still not be the time for that as we still need to get the deficit down and into surplus. got help us if comrade cob got in with his more than £1trillion of borrowing announced, which probably means far more than that with the hidden borrowing.

£50grand sounds like a lot .After tax it comes to about £3grand a month, take out £1500 for mortgage or rent, another £500 for food, £500 for bills and it certainly does not seem like a huge amount.Andy wrote:Anyone who is earning £80,000/pa, a really large sum, will TAKE HOME a further £500 per month.

Re: Same old Tories. Help the rich, stuff the poor.
comrade cobs chancellor is in favour of slashing the working week to 10 hours and wages by 75%. While it would mean mp's still get £20grand plus expenses, although somehow I expect they would be exempt, that would mean the low paid would have to live on a lot less than £100 a week, but rents and food and services would still cost the same.Andy wrote:Good article in the Independent.
