The changing face of Jesus. Good idea or bad?
First topic message reminder :
Comics giant DC has been criticised for intending to show Jesus as a bumbling sidekick to superhero Sunman.
The comic was to claim God was disappointed with Jesus so sends him back down to earth to learn some tricks of one of the popular superhero's.

I kind of agree and disagree with you, except I don't agree it's been bad for the most part. It's simply a mixed bag, much like many institutions and ideologies.
As for totalitarian regimes, even with atheism as the state credo this made no difference to the atrocities committed. So I suspect that when it comes to the causes of war and oppression the real culprit is mankind.
"Mankinds' inhumanity towards other men.."
Which, when examined is only a result of our Darwinian impulse to dominate, exploit and win out, especially when populations are under pressure to compete for resources. Back in the good old days of sparse population and hunter gatherers people could afford these more egalitarian shamanistic practices. Once we settled down into an agrarian based way of life and things like property and status, civilisations and city states began to emerge that all changed.
Still though it's an odd dichotmy wherein people will accept one thing as simply a proven aspect of our natures, yet condemn it when viewed through the prism of religious belief.

I've always thought spirituality is a means to try and transcend the worst aspects of our natural material impulses, but when spirituality turns into religion those aspects come to dominate.
We're programmed to survive and yet we also appear to have a spiritual component programmed into us too.
is it all back to the thing about balance, ying and yang.
I have no answer.

I think spirituality is nothing more than an attempt to build hypotheses, when no obvious answer is evident. Every extended family has a father, and occasionally he gets angry.
When the floods or fires come, it's an easy leap to say it's like when father is angry. Think how closely the god image resembles the father image. Substitute a God in the place of father, and you find yourself saying, the gods are angry!
Repeat this in a thousand different cultures, over hundreds of decades, and you slowly build a religion.

Not just the father stereotype. The ancient ideas around kingship seem to apply. The benevolent ruler who can be terrible in his vengeance.

Even political leaders like kings, or warlords, were a derivative of the father image. Father & sons hunting party -> group warring -> hierarchy in ranks -> kings, dukes, earls, etc.
My belief is the oldest known structure was the family, with the father at the pinnacle...for better or worse. See, Marc Bloch, Feudal Society (1961). That is, if the father figure was good at social competition, he rose in stature. If not, so much for his off-spring.
Noah devised the Arc, which = success. Genghis Khan devised the horse and the reflex bow, which greatly advanced mobility and projectile warfare. Both had progenity that succeeded. They were deified in history.
