Children who play on iPads or watch too much television have poorer problem solving, communication and personal skills by the age of five
Allowing pre-school children to play on iPads and watch lots of television affects their development by the age of five, researchers have found.
Scientists assessed the communication, dexterity, problem solving and personal skills of 2,400 children at the age of two, three and five. They found those who were exposed to the most screentime at the age of two showed poorer development by the age of three. And those who spent most time in front of a screen at the age of three had poorer development at age five. The researchers, from the University of Calgary in Canada, said: ‘Digital media and screens are now ubiquitous in the lives of children.’
‘Although some benefits of high-quality and interactive screen time have been identified, excessive screen time has been associated with a number of deleterious physical, behavioural, and cognitive outcomes.’
The researchers, whose findings are published in the JAMA Pediatrics medical journal, tracked 2,400 children for their study.

It's bloody dire here is Thailand; probably the same in the UK these days too. Sticking a tablet in a kid's hand seems to be the easy go to when you want them to be quiet and out your way for a while.
I pretty much consider it a form a child neglect at this point. And it is turning them into spoilt, attention defective drones.
I've heard veya's argument about this being the 'new world' but honestly it seriously only works if WHAT they are doing on the tablet is actually helping with learning.
9/10 I see them watching youtube videos or playing mindless touchscreen games (and as a gamer myself, I know the different between dumb games and those that make you think a bit). Parents who do this are GROSSLY irresponsible and imo not fit to be parents.

Whats a kid to do though? From a young age many are ignored by their parents who are glued to their own i pads and phones, ignored and left to find their own entertainment.
Obviously it's not healthy for kids to be stuck in isolation living more online than in real life.
Rearing kids up to have a balanced lifestyle with activities and actual flesh and blood friends takes time and effort...if thats not forthcoming by the time those kids are teens the rot has set in.

My children alway enjoy conversation, sometimes about really odd subjects...because I’m me, after all. They also socialise a lot with friends.
The only time they really enjoy an iPad is just before bed, in bed, to wind down. Otherwise they play with toys, colour in, or glue stuff, make books etc (or used to, in the case of my now teenage son).
Television isn’t a massive deal in my house tbh.

@ title: Doesn't surprise me. Commonsense alone should tell you this, without the need to conduct highbrow studies.
It's probably part of a wider problem in the household tho.
Let's face it - the sort of parent who uses ipads & tv as the child's babysitter likely lets the child down in other ways too.

Sorry missed this mate and agree with everything you said
I think this video needs to be highlighted again for people to understand what is wrong here
