Homeless man and couple 'MADE UP' heart-warming story that he gave woman his last $20 as all three are charged with scamming donors who raised $400,000 for him on GoFundMe

A homeless man allegedly conspired with a New Jersey couple by making up a heartwarming story to scam donors into giving them $400,000 on GoFundMe.

Kate McClure and her boyfriend Mark D'Amico, of Bordentown, New Jersey, made headlines after setting up a fundraising page for Johnny Bobbitt last year.

She said Bobbitt came to her aid and gave her his last $20 when she ran out of gas on an Interstate 95 exit ramp in Philadelphia late one night last October.

More than 14,000 people donated to the GoFundMe campaign McClure and D'Amico set up as a way to give back to Bobbitt.

But now, it has been revealed that McClure, D'Amico and Bobbitt will all face charges including conspiracy and theft by deception, NBC10 reports.

Yeah, I always thought there was something funny about that story, particularly after the facts about the alliance were revealed. Why were the sponsors taking any money at all...wasn't the charity all for the homeless guy? That's certainly what the donors thought.

When they took the deal to court, they got found out, eh?

Yeah, initially it warmed everyone cockles.... but then you find out it was all a scam, and you think....I give up hoping humans will change.  They never will.

There are so many scams these days, and having fund-raisers on the internet is just giving people the opportunity to commit more scams. There have also been stories lately about homeless people not actually being homeless - it can be very lucrative out on those streets apparently. It's a shame, and I hope I don't become too cynical but I do tend to be rather suspicious these days.

I remember that name Bobbitt, wasn't he the one who had his Gentlemans Sausage cut off ?

They were dishonest and broke the law. They will be punished & rightly so.

But I cannot work up any outrage, sorry. No violence or coercion was involved. They concocted and sold a sob story and gullible people bought it.

Financiers, speculators and hedge fund managers make easy millions through sharp practices verging on outright fraud. The difference is that they are legitimised to do so. Average Joe is not and so gets punished.

Yeah. The world is full of liars. Some more obvious than others. The couple are disgusting and so is the man who went along with them.

I don’t buy into those “social expertiment” videos either.

I think what makes it offensive is it was done solely for money, under false pretenses...and they are out in the open so the public can put a face on it. As Jules says, this is what American capitalism does everyday through advertising: shout things that are untrue, and ask for money.

The "last $20-dollar bill" wasn't the only lie, but it is indicative. I think what makes people mad about the whole thing, is that the story pulled at heartstrings so.
