THE Melbourne Cup has again been marred by the death of a horse, this time the Irish-trained The Cliffsofmoher.
The Aidan O’Brien-trained horse suffered a fractured shoulder during Tuesday’s race and had to be euthanised, Racing Victoria’s executive general manager of integrity services, Jamie Stier, said in a statement.
“The horse received immediate veterinary care, however it was unable to be saved due to the nature of the injury sustained,” he said.
Animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has called for an investigation into the death, which it described as “the most recent victim of the cruel annual spectacle”.
World Animal Protection also condemned the incident, labelling the Melbourne Cup a “disgrace”.
“The Melbourne Cup is the (disg)race that stops a nation. It’s heartbreaking to see another horse needlessly lose its life during the Melbourne Cup,” senior campaign manager Ben Pearson said in a statement.
“World Animal Protection opposes the use of all animals in entertainment, including the use of horses in the racing industry. It’s time to end the cruelty.”
The RSPCA released a statement on the matter, joining the chorus of discontent.
“RSPCA Australia has long voiced its concerns about the welfare of racehorses, including the use of inhumane devices such as whips and tongue ties, as well as the risk to injury and death during races,” RSPCA Australia spokesperson Jane Speechley said.
“Today’s tragedy is a stark reminder of the risks these horses face every time they run, and highlights that behind the gloss and glamour of Cup celebrations there is a dark reality.
“The racing industry has much work to do across industry standards and enforceable regulations, to meet community expectations and care for the welfare of the animals involved.”
Social media was flooded with angry messages from people condemning the racing industry in response to what veteran commentator Bruce McAvaney described as a “tragedy”.

This is becoming a real issue
6 race horse have died in Melbourne cup races in 5 years

there does seem to be something wrong in an industry with that high a casualty rate.

This isn't something that's new. It's been going one since horse racing began.

Every year the Grand National claims horses lives.....it's utterly sickening and so are the people who make money out of this kind of horse race.

Death on the race course is the tip of the iceberg, horses are flown all over the world for racing and breeding, if they get too upset in flight they are euthanized, thousands of foals are bred every year so many never even get to train or race, they aren't going to make the grade get sold at yearling racehorse sales every year, some are 'lucky' and end up in low grade racing, it used to be called flapping but many are bought by horse meat traders. If they are lucky they end up in the breeding programme at the end of their racing career others just get killed off.
All those people turn up for a day's racing then when something horrific happens in front of them, they cry and scream about it but otherwise never think of what goes on. Its true that the top horses get a life of comfort and luxury but they have to strain themselves to the limit of their endurance some, burst blood vessels, heart attacks, bleeding lungs broken legs, hooves ripped off the horror doesn't stop. Its the same with greyhounds except more ordinary people can afford to buy a greyhound past its best or not making the grade, for greyhound flapping the treatment some of them get is absolutely awful. Horse nor greyhound flapping are regulated.

People will tell you that horses love racing and that dogs like chasing, well up to a point they do, horses are herd animals so if one runs, due to danger, the rest aren't going to stand around wondering what's going on, same with racing everybody else is running so I will as well. Just as bad if not worse, due to some training methods, is show jumping, horses obviously will jump if required but they aren't really built for it, imagine that weight landing on two slender legs, at best these get splints and cracks in their bones. I agree that horses do like to run for pleasure, usually though, when they want to and at their own pace and they stop when they want to. Don't get me started on horses and hounds and the stuff that happens to them without even mentioning the fox. Its a nice spectacle until you find out what goes on behind the scenes. We had a local man in court a couple of years ago he was seeing to greyhounds the flapping racers didn't want anymore until one was found on the mountain under a galvanised sheet with a hole in its head, it was still alive but had to be put down, he'd been doing this for years.
Sport should be people only risking life, limb and paralysis, they at least can make their own decisions as to the danger.

the cup only goes for a few days (it's like your grand national), heaps more would die over the complete year.

6 in five years is more than 1 a year  Wink

You know what the saddest thing is? Horses and dogs will do anything to please a human. Only people who've never been around either say that they have no personality, no foibles, or feelings. A horse will race until its heart bursts, and a dog will die protecting you. Animals have no voice. Humans can be so despicable. It's up to us to find that voice for them.

Arrow

AS BAD and as cruel as the equestrian sports are, they are still likely to outlive everyone here, for one simple reason -- there is so much money involved...

Australia is one of the "top three" racehorse breeding countries in the world -- up there with Britain and the USA -- with the "Blue Grass" region of Kentucky, the areas around Ascot in England, and Scone here in the Hunter Valley region of NSW, being the leading centres for the world's bloodstock industries..

The leading owners and breeders of racehorses are represented in one or all of these regions.

This week's Melbourne Cup winner was an English horse, owned by Sheik M'booty of Brunei, with an Aussie trainer and jockey..

The British Royal Family owns one of the largest racing stables over there in England.

Here in Oz alone, across all equestrian 'sports', the horse breeding sector, and related industries (e.g. feed, veterinary hospitals, education and training -- and especially gambling), they turn over $$billions$$ every year, and employ over 200,000 people..

While the equestrian industries on the whole are likely to keep on going, hopefully the crueller aspects can be eliminated -- steeplechases, running races in wet weather or on hard tracks, unrestricted breeding practices, fox hunting...
