The budget
So the Chancellor is giving secondary schools a £50k lump sum.
Call me cynical, but as that isn't ring fenced. most will end up as a bonus for the academy head teachers.
At my wife's school, the head made 3 teaching assistants redundant last year and then gave himself a £40,000 bonus as a high achieving school. He is a right cnut, hated by every member of staff. Earns £200,000 pa and pays minimum wage to all his admin staff.

Re: The budget

I agree, Tommy. That is what Academies have brought to the table. Heads can now pay themselves whatever they want, they hold the budget and control the pursestrings.Tommy Monk wrote:

What a clusterfuck by the Government. Effectively privatising schools, to give the head complete autonomy, and answerable to nobody, not even the governers.
There are many who earn in excess of £300,000 pa.

Re: The budget
Andy... remind us which party it was that brought academies in...?
And while we're at it... don't forget it was Labour who signed us up to pay 500 billion to PFI companies to build 50 billion worth of new schools and hospitals...

Re: The budget
PFI's were a poor decision by Labour. This present Government are paling that event into insignificance, though, with a succession of shitty calls.

Re: The budget
Both sets of government have made stupid, rash and positively harmful decisions over the years and the majority of voters have let them do it over and over, core Labour voters will vote for anything Labour promises, Conservatives will do the same with the Tories. Time to be heard, complain to you m.p., tell them what you want to see done, demand a 'non of the above' on ballot papers. Since parliament has been televised I have even less faith in them and I didn't have much before. The way Brexit has been handled by all parties is a disgrace, the dragging of feet must have left a deep rut in both houses. The country voted, every parliamentarian should have then made every effort to get the best possible deal for all and given a united front to the EU.

Re: The budget
I was listening to LBC radio earlier, was talk about the budget and school funding etc... some snotty little lefty champagne socialist kid got on air and started complaining about tory cuts to schools and how he had seen reduced teaching services happening... and when asked about what had been cut... he said that they no longer had specialist PE tutors coming in from outside to teach them yoga...!!!
WTF!!!???

Those figures are too ridiculous for words...
While mainstream teachers (and nurses) in Oz are paid better than their British counterparts under the award wages here, school principals are also covered by award rates -- they simply can't grant themselves bonuses and higher pay rates.
Even for a good principal in a elitist/"selective" public high school, with car and housing benefits, he/she would still be lucky if they earn the equivalent of £100k a year..
************************************************************************
When the former Labor gov't down here decided to have a big splash out on the schools over here a few years ago (a bit of "stimulative spending" just after the 'GFC'..), they spent a couple of billion dollars, with grants to individual schools varying from a $$a hundred thousand, or less$$ up to $2 or 3 million per school -- but the schools had to apply that money to new buildings and/or providing facilities -- they couldn't throw it away on elitist bonuses or increased salaries..
I saw some primary schools around here managing complete overhauls over a couple of years..
A far cry from seeing Britain's current corporatist lickspits helping their rich chums to further pad their own pockets at everyone else's expense.
