OKTOBERFEST, the weeks-long German celebration dating back to the 1800s, is known for beer, Bavarian food and parades, but recently it has become recognised for something else — scantily clad women.
At least that’s how some Germans feel, and Australians are among the worst offenders, Fox News reports.
In a newspaper interview, a Munich-based crime author accused tourists of poorly imitating dirndls, traditional Bavarian clothing worn by women during Oktoberfest.
“With the young women it often looks like porno dresses, short and low-cut and cheap material,” he told The Times.
“It has nothing to do with identity.”
According to reports, more people than ever have started wearing traditional Bavarian outfits to the world’s most popular beer festival.
Franz Thalhammer, 70, a former chairman of Munich’s Georgenstoana Baierbrunn folk group, called out Australian and Italian tourists specifically for sexualising the uniform.
“A dirndl is something nice — it can make almost anyone pretty. But some of the dresses you see these days are crazy,” he said.
“You go in a tent and it’s full of paralytic Australians and Italians and they’ve forked out €250 ($400) for a complete Bavarian outfit and think they’re Bavarians. It’s as if I’d walk around half naked and say I’m Australian.”

It could also be that this is a traditional regional/national dress that some people don't want messed with. Imagine other national costumes or daily wear being messed about with in this way, the uproar from some quarters would be deafening. It can be seen as disrespectful.

In the 70's there was a few Beer Kellers in Manchester doing a roaring trade, I worked in one of them myself.
In some of them the standard uniform was similar to the outfits the girls wore in the OP.
No one seemed to mind then, I wonder why people have gotten so precious over the years?

Actully each European country has unique cultures, languages, food, music etc formed over centuries. They only share generally a religious identity. Cultures have formed over time uniquely to those countries

Ben, seems to have left out a mountain of different ethnic groups that settled in France, Briton etc also throughout the centuries

Tell a Scotsman and Irishman they are culturally the same as the English and am sure without doubt, you would be lucky to get away with simple verbal abuse.

Down here, the local Germania club puts on a mini-Oktoberfest over at Warners Bay..

They used to have their own clubhouse and ran Oktoberfest over a few days -- nowadays it's a couple of days, utilizing local pubs and restaraunts.

is the dress within the bounds of the dress's definition?
Is it being sold under that name?
Are the girls Profiting from it?
