'Two British tourists' are among seven people injured as 'Afghan' knifeman goes on rampage through central Paris before local petanque players throw boules in a bid to disarm him
Two British tourists were injured by a knifeman who went on the rampage in the centre of Paris as locals playing petanque tried to stop him with boules. French police have arrested the knife-wielding attacker who injured seven people in the capital on Sunday night, four of them seriously. The man, who was reportedly carrying a knife and an iron bar, stabbed three people outside a cinema on the banks of a canal in the north-east of the city, although officials said they did not believe it was linked to terrorism.
The suspect, who was described as an Afghan national, went on to injure other victims in the head and chest, Le Parisien reported. One of the Brits was particularly badly hurt by 'a stab in the head', while the other was 'cut in the chest' in the attack just after 11pm (10pm BST) on Sunday.
A security guard at one of two cinemas on either side of the Canal de l'Ourcq said he saw a man who had already assaulted people being chased by two other men who tried to stop him.
'He had an iron bar in his hand which he threw at the men chasing him, then he took out a knife,' he told AFP.
A police investigation has been launched for attempted murder, according to a judicial source.
