Police defend officer filmed 'slapping' teenage girl

Police have defended an officer who drew criticism after being filmed allegedly slapping a teenage girl.

In the video, it appeared he pulled the young woman's hair as she resisted arrest.

The disturbance was filmed by a passer-by in Accrington, Lancashire on Monday, and they posted it on Facebook.

The video has been viewed over two million times, with shocked viewers condemning the police force.

Lancashire police have responded, explaining that while the restraint techniques "may look shocking to untrained individuals", officers are trained to use such techniques on people who are resisting arrest.

They added that officers were injured during the altercation, with one female officer suffering bite marks and a male officer sustaining cuts to his head.

The chief constable of Lancashire, Andy Rhodes, said that officers arrived at a "very hostile situation" at 5.45pm on Monday, and there were reports of youths fighting at the Market Hall.

They should all have done what they were told in the first place.

What does restraint have to do with slapping?

According to his statement, the group turned on the arriving officers, who used "reasonable force to bring the situation under control."

He added that an officer used an "open hand strike" on a 14-year-old girl who was alleged to have grabbed the officer's taser and radio.

A spokesperson said in a statement: "We understand this footage may appear concerning. However, officers are trained to use restraint techniques which may look shocking to untrained onlookers. A full investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident will take place in due course."

watched the video and saw a police officer, well 2 of them restraining a violent teenager. well done those coppers for doing their job.

     

In that video, it clearly shows the teenage girl attacking the police...

Maybe those online critics would have preferred it, if the cops had pepper sprayed, clubbed and tasered that girl instead,  rather than simply giving her a light open-handed tap ?

Some people are never satisfied..

I suppose if there's a wild violent teenager who is off her head on drink & drugs, an officer can do whatever it takes to subdue them?
 

But perhaps a slap should be a last resort. No one is really supposed to strike another person with the open palm - ie slap them - (and this applies to the army as well). 


When you slap someone you're not subduing or restraining them, you're simply beating them up. As in …. giving them a hiding. 

Didn't hysterical people get slapped at one time, maybe a slap would surprise her enough to understand the situation she was in.

Yes a good old slap delivers an effective reality check. But when the police do it, it can be interpreted as anger and loss of temper - which are both unprofessional traits.

His size is huge compared to the girl and ideally he should be able to subdue her using professional martial arts techniques alone.

Those few online critics quoted in the O/P should be happy that they're not over in Minneapolis...

Over there, the cops would have shot all of those suspects first, and then asked questions afterwards..

You appear to be in the wrong thread or even the wrong forum.

Anyway, why do people fight with the police? Once the police arrive, just calm down and do as you're told. It's highly disrespectful to argue or fight with the police.

A lot of women who have calmed down and done as they were told by police have ended up with a mouthful of dick.
