Thirty killed including a baby and dozens more feared dead as 'wobbly' highway bridge collapses while cars drive across it in 'apocalyptic scene' during fierce storm in Genoa

At least 30 people have been killed 'including a baby' and dozens more are feared dead after a huge 260ft section of a highway bridge collapsed during a fierce storm in the Italian city of Genoa.

Cars fell 300ft along with tonnes of twisted steel and concrete debris into a river, railroad tracks and an industrial zone below when the Morandi bridge gave way at 11.30am local time.

Officials have said 'dozens' are dead in what is being described as 'an immense tragedy.' There are reports that a baby is among the victims and that two people died in their homes when the giant structure collapsed.

One witness described the carnage as 'apocalyptic' with up to 35 cars and three heavy trucks cascading into the valley below as they were making their way over the bridge. Another said he saw the 50-year-old crossing 'wobbling' minutes before it gave way.

There's dozens of these Bridges across the World built in the same manor, they'll all have to be examined !

It was reported also, that some engineers had advised a couple of years ago, that the bridge should be closed/decommissioned, and replaced  --  as nobody over there wanted to properly maintain and repair it any longer, because of rising costs..

The DailyFlail's incompetent reporters stuffed up badly with their attempts at metric conversions...

They claimed that some cars fell "300 feet"..

Yet, the official figures given for overall dimensions, in their actual story,  says that the highest point of the bridges roadway is 48 metres above ground level --  that's 160 feet..

Allowing for the bridge collapsing beneath the cars, and the thickness of the bridge itself, the longest that some cars would freefall is probably less than 120 feet, with most vehicles falling less than half that --  just have a look at how the wreckage of the bridge ended up.

What about too much penny-pinching, side-stepping and "passing the buck" when it came maintenance and repairss, on the part of Italian authorities ???

The DailyFlail reported that some engineers had already suggested that it should be replaced.
