I think there's a kernel of truth in most religions but far from worshiping a diety I think the idea was to have rules to live by in close proximity of other people and in the case of Judaism and some of the older religions it was a health and safety manual for eating and sexual health in times before modern medicine, even though way back in history there were quite effective medicines around which we are only now rediscovering. The problem was and is that at some time someone decided that it might be a route to controlling the mass of people by expanding the ideas of the religion/health and safety manual.
